I always avoid any first year redesign vehicles. First year is like a guinea pig, lets see what we did wrong. And maybe we'll fix it or not (like the trany problems they still haven't addressed).

My 2016 has been perfect. Nothing wrong with the transmission that the tsb’s didn’t address. Transmission isn’t perfect but, it’s reliable.

I would avoid buying a modified truck at all costs. Much better off buying a stock rig IMHO.

    Good luck!

Ha ... clearly not like new. But looks like the guy is putting 15K miles on the truck a year, right? That is not terrible. Anywhere from 10K to 15K is within the realm of reason -- but definitely not like new!

I think it comes down to knowledge, skill set and who did the work. For me, I have to admit that I am not that knowledgeable and I don't have the deepest skill set so I can't really say that I can look at the truck and really assess what was done and if it was done well. That is just me. There are lots of folks here who could look at that truck and really know what they are getting -- and can do a pretty accurate assessment.

Separately, I am in NY and we don't have good shops here. So I don't trust I can look at this truck and give a sound analysis. On the other hand, say the truck was actually modded by a solid shop with a great reputation (the kind that seem to be all over the West). I might buy a modded truck if I could take it to the shop that did the work -- or some expert far smarter than me -- and they could give it a thorough inspection and let me know the work was solid. I suppose in that case it would be worth considering. I would just need a more solid expert opinion than my own!

But stepping back from that whole discussion, I think the price of that truck is high enough that with a little patience a far better option -- maybe even new -- could be found.

Glad your truck is good and reliable.

I had a GMC with problems and replaced trany on my dime so not happy about that. So now I'm gun shy about buying 3rd gen if I decide to replace my truck.

I agree with the others. I've had bad luck with first-year cars (blown motor in my F-150). Plus that truck is getting close to enough miles for the lift to begin exhibiting any issues in the quality or installation. I wouldn't go for it, but if I did I would get an inspection done by a trusted mechanic prior to buying.

Your mistake was buying an American truck. I’ve been buying Toyota trucks since 1977. Never had a bad one.

Wanna take a minute and THANK everyone for your feedback ...valuable & appreciated. Having never owned a Tacoma before & this modified ‘16 catching my eye, figured TW would be a wise place to start with a simple question “what do you experienced taco owners think of this deal?”
Reply#20 scottalot questioned my “decision making skills” for even considering the truck. That’s a profound judgment; sorry I wasted your time with my question man (with 124K replies under your belt are you the “god” of TW?) No worries & no butthurt... I’ll take my 35yrs of military/civilian pilot decision making skills back to the flightdeck this final year.
    As for the truck-
You guys rock & helped my direction, big thanks.

OP. glad that we, as a group, were able to help you make a good decision. That is what this forum is really all about. And, thank you for taking the time to come back and let us know what you decided.

I wouldn't get hung up on one or two responses that may rub you the wrong way (I didn't go back and look specifically at what was said). Best to move on and focus on what you are trying to do and the good advice that gets offered here.

If you are looking for a Tacoma, let us know why. We can help you find one new -- or find a solid used one that will be a good fit for you. They are great trucks. Sometimes perfect. Sometimes not. Like all mechanical vehicles.

But overall if you are looking to get into a Tacoma you will get a lot of help here finding the right one ...

Best of luck to you ... and stay with us ... post back if you find the truck of your dreams ...

I think I would not buy a modded truck for that much. Probably not even if the price was more inline. Mods don't add value to the vehicle, to the enjoyment of the owner maybe.

You have to know the parts put all are good quality the work done well and everything work as it should.

I sold a lifted vehicle but it wasn't a 30k vehicle. It was a simple lift, OME coils and shocks with JBA UCA's. That's good stuff. I really didn't get more for it because of that. I'd honestly walk from a seller that expects to get a bunch of money from mods back..

OP I would definitely pass, odds are someone else project truck can become your headache. At least when you buy a 'stock' truck you get to learn the ins and outs of doing the mods yourself or you can research what mods you want.

I’m relatively new to off-roading and the like, but I really need an explanation as to why the the front wheels are roughly facing 90 degrees away from each other?

Jesus, I just noticed how messed up the toe is lol. I feel like the owner took that picture when he f***ed something up offroading but assumed everyone else would be too stupid to notice, or maybe forgot
