Sold the bed cover in preparation for my camper, looking forward to doing a bed build to house this guy and my wife's Kona as well as a kitchen drawer setup. Anyone do MTB camping regularly?

Heck yeah! I can't wait to park myself in the middle of nowhere and feast on empty lines for a few days.

Also, Colorado peeps: I heard dispersed 18 road camping is no longer a thing. Any truth / verification? I can't find any info on it.

    What camper are you getting?

My buddy and his wife grew up there. I just texted him...

Doesn't seem quite as drastic as what you may be hearing but I could have found something unrelated.

Dude, that bed build out is incredibly thought out. Nice work on that! I think the only thing I'd change is situating the bike platform on one side of the bed so I can better see out the rear window. I'm picking up my GFC V2 at the end of next week.

Thats something different. Sarlacc, etc have been seasonally closed for years. I was told by a CO buddy generally in the know that the "party ditch" out at 18 road basically got loved to death and they made it all FCFS camping in designated spots only.

This "Party Ditch" to be exact

I checked the BLM website and it didn’t mention any restrictions. It did advertise for its actual campsites but made no mention of dispersed camping. It is designated a “special recreation area” so that may give them authority to make those calls.

My buddy said they are turning the "party ditch" in to an actual campground.

That would make sense. I figure once they do that, it'll be pay to play like my buddy said. Sorta sad you cant just go camp anymore, but it had gotten really out of hand.

    Thanks.

Congrats on the new GFC, that V2 update looks killer.

There's a couple reasons the bikes go in the middle...
    • The handlebars are too wide and wouldn't fit nicely through the rear window if they were on the side. I could mount the fork mounts at an angle, but that creates other issues.
    • It's really nice to have a central galley way for camper functionality (bike slide is a secondary function, as the bikes usually go on a hitch rack).
    • I can't really see out the rear window anyway because the "crib door" already blocks most of the rear-view.
Yea, I hear ya but also yea...I feel like we've had to deal with a rave every time we've camped there...

I'm really excited for the GFC, been a long time waiting. And thanks for the info, that makes a lot of sense. I'll have to do some thinking as to how I can make 2 bikes back there work but I may end up going down a similar path as you. Do you get any concern from the bikes wobbling in the back from uneven road surface since the fork mounting solution isn't exactly the most solid? The remaining concern about doing this whole buildout is ruining something in my fork or headset in the mean time.

Also, any estimate as to how much the whole build weighs? I can imagine with all you've done that weight has crept up there.

The bikes don't move too much on the fork mount inside the camper. I've had two bikes in there driving around the desert and they've come out unscathed, despite being packed in there pretty tightly. It actually kinda helps that the pedals are wedged up against the sides of the cubbies, preventing too much wobble.

The prior version of my camper build (similar but simpler plywood setup) weighed 617lbs loaded up for camping (water, stove, bedding, clothes, and miscellaneous gear minus bikes). I took it to a CAT scale before and after I had my whole camper setup installed to help decide on a new leaf pack.

One last bit of advice...don't make any final/expensive build-out plans until you have your camper and have used it a bunch. You will learn a lot about how you want the space to function after you get to be in it and use it.
