It is. But it prevents rusted parts and is relatively cheap to DIY.

I'll put a couple hours in to save my truck from rotting away prematurely.

May be less of an issue in Nevada.

 

I always seem to spray the frame right before snowfalls, but keep meaning to do it once when temperatures are in the 70's for viscosity reasons even after heating it up and also FF creeps better at that temperature range.

 

I bought the pro kit with the sprayer and what-not, I used woolwax instead tho.

I was really happy with how it worked, I put it up on stands and pulled the wheels and spare and went to town. I highly recommend the woolwax, it sprayed well on a sunny october day and not rushing my pancake compressor was able to keep up just fine.

The woolwax doesn't really drip much, I didn't need a drop cloth and I just used a dust mask and safety glasses with some work clothes and stayed pretty clean. Sprays out thick without much misting at all, seems to be holding up well with all the salt and snow I've driven through since.

My 4runner is 13 years old so it was already a little rusty when I got it, if yearly woolwax can keep it under control I'll be a happy camper.

 

Just came from the dealer that completed my 2nd service under toyota care. They asked who did the rust proofing work on my truck, and what commercial rust inhibiter was it...one of the mechanics was really impressed saying its the best stuff he's seen applied on their chassis so far. Told them i did the work using cosmoline rp-342. Just sprayed it on it very hot weather. I guess they are now looking into this stuff.

 

Last fall was my first time using WoolWax and tried heating it up, but it wasn't enough to get the viscosity to the point it would flow properly with my Kellie Sport spray kit. Next time I try WoolWax I will do it when the temperature is high enough to flow properly. I ended up going back to the FF and that flow properly even at the lower temperture.

 

What was the temperature you were spraying at? It was maybe mid 60's when I did mine, I left the can in the car until I did it so it warmed up in the sun.

I bought the inline pressure regulator that they have, I didn't end up using it though as the one on my compressor seemed to dial in pretty well.

 

I would say 40's but being in the shade with the sun going down seemed colder...lesson learned.. I was mainly using the WoolWax to coat the inside of the front box section.

 

I bought a "hot pot" (the kind of thing you would use to heat up a can of soup in your dorm room) at a thrift store. I heat up the wool wax while I'm getting the truck ready and after I fill the spray bottle I add more to the pot so it heats up while I spray the first batch.

 

Don't know about wool wax, but ff can get pretty messy. I hope your doing all this in a good warm setting. It seems to go on and dry better on a good warm undercarriage, otherwise it'll take forever to dry and drip like no tomorrow.

 

Does "ff" mean Fluid Film? I've been DIY Fluid Filming my vehicles every fall for about 10 years. Applying Fluid Film is a dirty messy job crawling around under the truck. But Fluid Film never dries & it doesn't drip unless you put it on waaaaay to heavy.

 

YES, I used to type the whole name but figure when you comment on a thread titled "Fluid Film" most people understand the abbreviated "FF".

Yep fluid film. Every time i used it on my 01 tundra in cool weather it'd take days to harden up, and it'd drip. Spray it on in 80+ temp days, and no issues dripping, it would go on much nicer and stay somewhat tacky for nearly a day, and then setup with a hard coating till any water contacted it. Once wet ff can be washed off just splashing though a good street puddle. Most of what i applied in the early fall was gone by next april. So far the cosmoline i did my new tacoma with back in july is still all there just like i sprayed it on yesterday. Imo, a way better choice if you don't want reapply ff every year, or sooner. Again it would depend where your located, and drive your truck. Here in connecticut the road salt is brutal from december to april.

 

I realized this is a ff thread. I questioned it because the description of the product you use does not represent the Fluid Film characteristics the manufacturer claims or the experienced I have had using it.

 

Go do it in a parc, or at a Mall, not your laneway......

But do it, do it, do it!

 

I bought a pack of 6 cans off eBay. Used all of them. I did the most critical areas removing the tires and the spare, plus dropping the engine shield.

 

I've used ff on my 70's new holland lawn tractor's mower deck longer than i've ever used it for my vehicles...its always gone on the same. Greasy till it sets up depending how warm the weather is after its applied. It does whats its suppose to, encapsulates rust. I'm getting up in age, and don't wish to be crawling under trucks anymore to apply this stuff. I'll still buy ff for my 48'' mower deck thats an easy 10 minute job to apply.

 

I did it, it's done! The TYVEK suite was the BEST advice. A must! Crawling around under the truck was not the most fun. After a while my googles got too messy, along with the fogging because of the mask made me go without, I'm still here and can see for now... Now wait -n-see; hopefully the smell of funky roasted lamb won't hang out in my garage for too long!

 

The smell will be there for a week or so. It dissipates eventually.

It doesn't smell good but it wasn't as bad as some say.

 

This is true. It's not a horrid smell, just something that is a little peculiar. It goes away. Farts smell much worse.
