Diff oil change

Just wondering if diff oil is something the dealer changes after a new truck purchase during the first or second maintenance or should I do it myself at 10k? thanks.

 

Do it at 30k. It’s not included in any free maintenance. 10k it’s probably going to look perfect still. I’ve been doing 40-50k changes and it still looks reasonably good.

Also loosen fill plug before draining it. Just in case, don’t want to have an empty diff and a stuck fill plug.

 

Some people change it after a few thousand after it’s broken in, and others drive their truck 250 000 miles and never change it. Do what makes you happy.

 

This is the most beneficial post on the entire forum for the day! Its been said many times on here but it's soooo true!

 

Shouldn’t be an issue on a brand new truck but always a good idea to do it that way.

 

Any recommendations for oil price not being an issue.

75w-90 is stock (Amsoil is probably one of top 3 quality lubricants)
75w-110 is what I run with 4.88’s and towing

Call me crazy, but this French gear oil, which is readily available on Amazon, has been treating me well. I find everything runs a little quieter.

 

I bet most trucks go their entire life on the factory fill of diff oil. I am planning to trade mine in next year, around 75k miles, and it will have the factory fluid in it.

I changed all three at 40k miles and the rear was pretty dark but the transfer case and front looked good.

I just did it again at 80k and all three were quite dark. I put in Lucas synthetic and I don’t plan to touch them again for 100k miles.

 

Mine looked new at 30something whenever I did it. Waste of time imho. I'll probably do the transfer case next out of boredom but it's probably fine too.

 

Factory fill is actually 75w-85. But any off the shelf

75w-90 will serve you well....conventional or synthetic.

Many folks run Mobil 1 75w-90 synthetic....myself included.

Just don’t use the 75W90 in your T-Case. You should use the 75W Toyota LF fluid in there or you may have 4WD shifting problems in very cold weather.

 

The oem one is spendy for oil haha
