I was rocking big AGM for awhile but the combo AGM + DCDC Charger plus solar the truck stays topped off all the time. For me its not much more for added power input. Since i have not been driving it, even in winter running the fridge 24/7 it stays perfect. Needed no but if your not moving much with the dcdc and solar its a great combo. I converted to a dual battery setup from a single. same watt-hours just 2 batteries. Right now I am not even using the second one so have a smaller battery and the solar and dcdc keep it stopped off. When I had the AGM solo it died in winter time.

You can get a Victron controller and Renogy panel pretty cheap or if you get a dcdc charger most are solar-ready too. Like many things is it needed no but its treated me well.

I really dont wanna spend $166 on this ( i feel like I could just get plates) but realistically, not worth the hassle of me getting plate, tube, etc. I'll prob end up buying the kit. https://trail-gear.com/armor/tacoma-rear-frame-box-kit.html

At this point you're pretty much relocating the shocks^ which I just did, so I'm a little bitter haha

I’ll be a dual battery set up. 100AH AGM house battery fed by the starter lead acid fed to a 20 dc to dc charger. I don’t have a fridge so it’ll just power lights and radios and a heating blanket for now.

You know what's odd, everyone says the fridge doesnt suck much juice, but mine does. Maybe cus I run it hard, but yeah a solar pannel would reall help me out for when the truck sits all day.

I was dead set on the fridge .... but I’ve been out for 5 days and never run out of ice. Granted I do Death Valley in the winter.

I was always weary of a fridge, seemed excessive but fav mod so far. I never have to worry about ice. That sounds dumb but its a huge PITA for me.
Everything is nice, dry and cold. Just go from my house fridge to my truck fridge and dip. I just take ice from a buddy for my tequila/ice drink - lol

yah after doing 2 weeks in AZ, Utah that was the last straw. I was using a Yeti style cooler and had blocks of ice and that shit would melt. I got tired of soggy veggies, grey meat etc. Right now I'm running a knock off fridge w/ dual zone and its awesome. Cold beers/ water on hand anytime even better when on trips.

Are you running AGM or Lead Acid? not sure if the dcdc accounts for all of it but Toynado has the same issue on his 3rd gen and the truck would not charge the battery enough and eventually died. Either way adding solar was great helps fight off the leaching. If your not driving the truck the solar helps. the dcdc you need to drive to charge or have a second battery. Solar adds the green source.

I’d probably go with the Mobicool if I jumped. Dometic is rad I’m sure but mobicool is 1/3 the price and probably works just as well.

Starter Battery under the hood is lead acid. House battery is AGM deep cycle. It’s my daily driver. And when camping I don’t stay in one place for more then a day. I had a person smarter than me go through the electrical plan a d sign off on it. Trial by fire.

Definitely depends on what fridge you got, the temp you run and how full it is

some of the cheap ones are cheap, but you pay for it in power consumption. Some of them I’ve looked at are 2-3x the power draw of a dometic. Having them full and the insulated jackets help too.

Good news is they seem to be running on the fast side of 6-8 wks.

I paid my 50% on Jan 7. Got the email for install date today. Could have scheduled as soon as next Monday but Weds the 17th works best. So thats a little less than 6 wks. Stoked!

Will leave on Thurs or Friday and stop at a few spots along the way. Then have a couple weeks or so to get back to Socal. If weather works out I'll do a few days biking around Portland. Then take the OR and Norcal coast home. The landslide on Hwy 1 is a bummer but I've done that drive before, so I'll cut around to SLO and continue on.

First project upon my return will be battery setup. I have a dometic fridge already which works ok on trips in cooler temps with decent amount of driving. But would like another battery with solar and/or charging via the alternator to keep it topped up.
