Windshield crack

Bought my 11 Taco 9 days ago. While driving today, I had a pebble come up and hit the front windshield. It didn't spider web the windshield, but it did leave a minor chip. My question can I bring this to the Toyota dealership to get repaired, or am I going to pay out of pocket to get it fixed? Thanks and great website

 

Depends on where you live. Some states offer free repair or replacement depending on ins. coverage. If its outta poket then maybe $35-50 to have it repaired. Mine looks like its been sand blasted. Waiting for as long as i can before replacing.

 

Contact your insurance co or try a local glass co. I would not look for the dealer to do anything for you.

 

I just found out that you can seal it to prevent it from spreading. My deductible on my insurance is $1000 so I rather not go that route.

 

Glass is often not subject to the deductible.

 

Thats why I got the extended warrenty for replacement on windshild and door dings.

 

if it is only a ding or chip as you will....you can seal it yourself with a kit at an auto parts store for like $10
or you can go to a glass shop for like $50 mabye more

 

The glass shops here repair the chips for $15. Check it out.

 

Contact your insurance. I can almost guarantee you that it will be no out of pocket expense to you.. I know mine does it that way. They would rather seal it, than replace your windshield for you.

Then, don't follow the Jackass that thought his truck looks better without rear mudflaps...

 

I had the same damn thing happen to me a couple days ago - truck doesn't even have a thousand miles on it and already got a nice star in my windshield. I think here in Maryland that pretty much every insurance company pays to have the crack repaired without a deductible. If the crack is too big, or in the line of sight of the driver, then they won't repair and you have to pay deductible for the replacement. Oh well, at least we didn't roll our truck like a few other posts from guys out on the left coast.

 

I caught a pebble and got a dime sized spider web crack on my '09 a month ago. I went to Autozone and picked up a permatex repair kit and it worked great. I followed the directions and it came out OK but there was a little extra resin on the surface of the windshield that looked wavy. So I took my dremel tool with a foam buffer and a little dab of the Dremel polish and it buffed right out. The repair is almost invisible. 15 minutes saved a trip to a glass shop and dealing with insurance, etc. It is definitely worth a try.

insurance. as the others have said i'd be very surprised if your insurance doesn't have a deductible-exempt glass clause.

funny, i posted a few weeks ago about a tint debacle that left me with a scratched side pane. they are cheap. i ordered the OE glass through my friend's body shop. as it turned out, an acquaintance who is a glass guy showed up when i was picking up my piece and we were talking shop - he said the OE back glass and windshields are EXPENSIVE as hell for these trucks, and he sees a ton of windshield work due to the design of the front end. he said definitely get a deflector. i questioned it in my head but the dude's career is glass so i have to consider it.

 

It's funny you say this because I was behind a mid-sized 4 dr car. . Anyway, the chip is not interfering my view so i'm just going to go to an auto parts store and see if I can do it myself. Thanks

 

tap on it till it spreads. then call the insurance and get a new windshield instead of one that was repaired. no deductible on glass most of the time

 

I had a very tiny chip on my windshield on my 02 taco. A pebble on the highway. I called my insurance and they gave me a whole new windshield. Not sure why. But I have 0 comp so it cost me nothing.

 

We here on TW condone this type of behavior. This is a law abiding website that promotes honesty and integrity among its members.(So will this technique work with State farm Ins. ?)

 

It seems like every toyota truck I've owned ended up needing a new windshield. The salt/sand mix layed on the roads does not help the situation where I live thou.
As many said, depending on your ins. co., the fix may not cost anything.
If you pay yourself or buy the kit, its not that expensive relatively.
I got a chip repaired by a glass co. & the tech gave me clear dot stickys to cover the next ones. He said water, dirt, varying temps, flex etc. can make a chip spread quickly depending on where it is.
The dot trick works, I drove around one winter with about 3 of them on there. Finally one cracked across, snapping the ice off the windshield.

 

Is this like when someone keys your door, you go ahead and key the whole truck, so they have to repaint the whole truck, thereby ensuring the paint matches?
