Lifting my 2021 trd off road

Hey everyone,

I was hoping to get opinions on good suspension set ups for a 3-5" lift and what size tires would be safe once I have the lift installed? I don't want to over stress anything but would like some more clearance and more aggressive stance.

If you go with 3 inch lift you’ll be safe with a 33’ inch tire, or 35’ with some trimming. If you go up to 5-6 inch lift you can fit a 35’ with either no or minor trimming + cab mount chop. Anything over 35’ is not really nessessary.

id start looking at bilstein or kings for ~3 inch lift.

rough country and readylift makes 5+ inch lifts but I don’t recommend lifting a Tacoma that high

Why do you need clearance? Are you just going for looks? Or have you already bottomed out on the trail?

I have a family mountain house with a bunch of trails and would like a little more clearance for piece of mind. I wouldn't want to go any larger than 33's. I want something quality and im not too concerned about cost but I also don't want to break the bank. I'm coming from a 2012 x5m bmw and i love having off road capabilities. My father used to have a 99 tacoma that I go my license in back in 2006. Im stoked to be in a tacoma.

 

A 2 inch lift seems to be the sweet spot on these trucks for a lot of folks with 3 being the max.

Higher and your cv angles will be extreme. Above 2 inches and you will need aftermarket upper control arms.

i’d say for what you want a 2.5 inch lift, UCA’s, and a cab mount chop can get you the height and tire size that would suit your needs

Pick whatever is in your price range.

I run Elka 2.0s (2"-3" lift) with a OME Dakar leaf pack and SPC upper control arms.
IMO good setup for winter/salty conditions and having lots of clearance to offroad.
All is decently affordable! All for about CAD$4,000 (DIY install).

 

I wouldn't go over 3 inches. You really get into the weeds doing that. Check out the Eibach lift. It's an improvement over stock, but won't break the bank. For the rear. you'll want an AAL. I also had to add a 1 inch block to get a little bit of rake after everything was installed. There are lots of options for 33 inch tires, but even with a lift, you'll likely need a CMC.

 

I agree. 2" up & 285 / 33" tires are really the most you want to go on these trucks. Anything higher or larger will create problems, poor ride quality, poor gas mileage & require more extensive mods (if you like to wheel moderately and not rub). I often see Tacomas that are 4 - 6" high with 35"'s and think to myself "man, that must ride like shit"

 

I got a 10 in lift on 33s

 

1. Kings
2. Aftermarket UCAs such as Camburg, Total Chaos
3. 33" wheels and tire: 285/75/6 or 285/70/17
4. Cab mount chop to fix the rub.
5. Add a leaf for the rear or go with new leaf springs.
6. done

2.5" to 3" with 33" tires on 17" wheels is the sweet spot.

Aftermarket coilovers and upper control arms and delete the sway bar in the front. Progressive AAL in the rear or a whole new leaf pack, with new shocks for the rear.

If you do all the work and pay for re-alignment you can keep the price way down.

Also be prepared to modify. Depending on wheels used you're likely to require a cab mount chop and pinch weld flattening in the rear of the front wheel wells. Where most if any rubbing will occur. Oh and you'll need to ditch the factory mud flaps

Edit: Tire choices, MT's run slightly bigger in diameter that AT's and in that size finding a MT tire that's not a load range E is next to impossible. Do your homework

I wouldn't want to spend more than $3,500 for the lift not including wheels and tires.

That may get you into 2.5" territory, some decent uppers and add a leafs, if you DIY. You may want to consider the clamshell needle bearing delete while you're at it (if you haven't done it yet). Check out Headstrong. They have a good selection of well priced packages for all budgets.
