I'll make it even more pea brained for you.
Shorted stock.
I have 100 shares of $AMC trading at $5.50. Someone BORROWS 100 share from me and agrees to return 100 shares to me at a later date for a small fee. They then sell those shares for $5.50 netting $550. Now, In a month or 2 I recall my shares. They have to return 100 shares to me. If $AMC is trading BELOW $5.50 they've made money. They buy back 100 shares at $4.50 and make 100.
The number of times this is done by groups/institutions is called "Short Interest"
Now if when you have to return my 100 shares the stock is $6.00 you're going to LOSE $50....now if a lot of people are short, and a lot get shares recalled that creates a rush to buy the shares to cover the borrowed shares...and that can cause the price to rise (supply and demand) and as the price rises, more shorts get worried and buy shares to cover...and the price goes up more...repeat...

Here's where the shennanegins came into play...Instead of letting this cycle play out with $AMC and MORE so $GME...They halted peoples ability to BUY shares. This removed any competition from the shorts and allowed them to short even MORE to cover their shares owed...
$GME was 150% shorted. There were 79 million shares and 120M shares shorted...
Right now there are almost 200,000,000 shares of $AMC trading per day. Based on those #'s it's not really possible to "short squeeze" $AMC
My contention all along was there was no real short squeeze possible for $AMC because of the daily volume being greater than the total share short...Theoretically the shorts could cover in a single day intermixed with regular volume.

Still not a thing for GME yet. & Those numbers were just from 1 site so I'm not sure exactly how accurate they are. A different site had a higher short percentage than this one did last time.

(Fun fact...Canada eliminated the penny from circulation in 2013 they round up/down to $0.05)
