Any good solutions for rodent problem?

I don't have a cat. However I have several cans of absolutely top quality cat food.
When I have a mole or squirrel or mouse problem, I just set out a dish of this cat food. The next few days the cat food is gone and my problem rodents are too. Neighbors have outdoor cats... I just add cat food.

 

Yes, this stuff works. They will not go anywhere near this stuff. Spray it outside around where you park your truck and it will keep them away. The like to go along walls and they stay away from open areas, so concentrate there. Underside of your truck might not be a bad idea, but be careful it doesn't get into your HVAC system. Maybe spray around wheels / tires and suspension components.

Any kind of trap that you using will have some kind of bait. You'll want that to be where you do NOT want the rodents to be. For example, when they were getting in my garage I put repellent inside the garage and traps outside. It was very effective.

 

I'm an indoor mouse trapping expert, but I've had trouble with them outside once. I had to leave my vehicle parked in the grass next to the wood line and it didn't get moved very often. They got up there and chewed the harness for the AWD system. Pain in the A**!
Good luck with getting into the garage. probably your best bet.

Snowy Owl & -40 temps. Thins ‘em out pretty good. Hootin’ kinda keeps you up at night tho.

 

I have no proof but I'm convinced that an oily undercoating is a good deterrent. I can only assume that they don't like crawling through the stuff. Added bonus is that your truck won't rust away.

 

Even if your not a cat guy, get some cat grass or catnip and grow it in your yard. It will attract stray cats and they will take care of the problem for you.

 

I am trying these now. The ultrasonic range is above mouse hearing, but the lights might be working. I have a thread on this, so far no sign of rodent activity, but it has been a short time and that is just me so the n is only 1. We will see though. For the price, I figured I'd try.
I did the poison thing, a while back. I was careful to choose one with very low secondary toxicity, but still didnt want to kill or harm other beneficial animals.

I have two of the battery operated ones under my hood left and right side. They use 2 C-Cell batteries each. I use rechargeable ones and switch the batteries once a week. They’ll run over 3 weeks, but I just got in the habit of changing them out once a week.

if the sound doesn’t chase them off, maybe the strobing LEDs will.

 

I actually just ordered the double A version - got the two pack and will try and test them out whenever my truck is fixed -- appreciate the heads up.

make yourself a cat person and buy 5 of them. Trust me, they get the job done.

 

I place bags of moth balls around engine bay. A box usually comes with ventilated bags. No problems anymore.

I hosed down the underside, frame, suspension, wheel well areas.. about everything with rust preventative (corrosionX and some corrosionX HD -similar to Woolwax consistency). It's a gooey smelly dripping mess at the moment. I couldn't imagine anything wanting to crawl over that. The HD stays kind of a wet/oily goo even after washing.

Anyone have experience with rodent issues even after rust preventative treatments? ..wondering if that is a 2 for 1 deal

 

The problem with cats is you have to feed them but not too much that they get fat and lazy then don't want to hunt. Cats can be the most successful preditors surbrban area. I always seem to have a stray cat or two around here besides my indoor cat.

Other things I was told to keep mice out of my pop-up camper over winter were.
Dryer sheets... Put some in the glove box and maybe one in the cabin air filter.
Peppermint oil. Put it on cotton balls around the truck and under the hood where it would stay dry. You would have to refresh to oil every week or so.
Cedar I'm told repels mice and other pests. Not tried it but I'd bet some of them little planks and things for closets might work.
The other thing I do with the camper is put irish spring soap in there. I take a few bars and cut them in quarters, them place around before closing it after the last trip in the fall. In the spring it still smells like a leprechaun just showered in there and I've yet to have mice in there. I'm sure you don't want your truck smelling like that though.

The sprays traps and bait are all good too but get bait stations that pets can't get in to.

Haven’t had an problems so far, but i’ve only been running them since Christmas.

 

Move the "bait" food traps outside. These just lure the critters into the garage.

Clean the garage, remove all food, drinks, crumbs. Next look at potential nesting materials like, insulation, pillows, blankets, foam, towels, paper.......

Apply some liquid repellents outside the garage, like a predator urine.

Clean the truck, just like the garage.

Lastly, check the garage for any places where the mice can slip into the garage. Remember, they can slip in through a hole about 1/4 inch diameter.
Check the bottom of the siding where it meets the foundation. When you find a gap, stuff some steel wool in it, then finish with a gap fill.
Inspect the garage door, specifically, the seal at the bottom and sides.

If you get a cat, do you plan to lock it in the garage?

 

This. My family does this to all our cars and most of our vehicles are parked in the middle of nowhere for weeks at a time. Never even seen signs of rodents under the hoods. I've watched red squirrels jump under my truck and immediately jump back out many times. Plus no rust.
