May want to change the oil WAY before 10k miles on your new tacoma.

In the 30's probably wasn't a bad idea every 2k miles
Look at 70's and even 80's pre fuel injection cars...change them at 3k miles and the oil was nasty with gasoline smell too.
Modern machining technology and fuel injection has no doubt been a contributor to longer lasting engines.

I certainly understand not wanting to damage a new engine, but.

The findings in the oil are "after the fact" findings: In other words, the dirty oil is a symptom of normal engine break in. If you change the oil every day, it really makes a negligible impact on overall engine long-term 'wear'. The parts are simply working together and as result, wearing material away and microscopic evidence of that process are showing up in the analysis. As it should ;-)

Understand that all the oil is filtered, it isn't like chunks of metal are banging around in the oil pan...The micron filters used in modern vehicles capture any damaging material. That is why nobody in oh, the last 40 years of so has an engine go BOOM! while driving down the road ;-)

I've always changed my vehicles oil myself at 3k intervals or less with Mobil 1 or Valvoline synthetic with oem Toyota filters. It's cheap insurance and most of the time I'm driving short distances and in stop and go traffic. I've managed to rack a whopping 10k miles since buying my truck new. HA!

 

Those people looking for reviews on products are in reality just looking for data points like you and I. What you and I know is that a lot of those data points are erroneous. There are pro fake ones, and negative fake ones, for nefarious reasons same as in this forum.

It takes a different skill set to sort out the fake from the real ones. You and I may have the skills to sort some of them out, but most do not so they form an opinion based on what they know. This brings us to you and I who may differ on opinions because we base ours on the science of what we know.
My research tells me that most gasoline combustion engines average around 20 percent thermal efficiency. This leaves us with about 80% waste inside that has to be cleaned out. This has not changed much since its inception as is the proven science.

The most efficient way I know of to clean harmful waste (proven by science) is to change the oil. Some people use catch cans. And some people believe that you can just leave it over time, no big deal it’s ok. That would be another opinion camp.

Problem is, I see the big deal in those many cases where there are operating variables that have yet to be documented and identified by science that give a different (costly) result.

Therefore, at least for me, the safest way is just to get rid of this harmful waste before it can do any serious harm.
That said, I value and respect your opinion, it does have merit for a certain set of circumstances cost wise. Like for instance a lease. Why change the oil?

But that’s not me. I’ll stick to what I know is effective, for the longer service life I’m looking for. Like handing it down in like new condition to the waiter that brings my food at the restaurant or a family member like a grand child who may not be able to afford a new ride given the outrageous insurance premiums they have to pay.

No they won't. But the reality is that the chances are good an engine will make to the end of the lease without failure. It's a gamble, but the probability of a win maybe in the players favor. That is only IMO of course

 

@farmtacoma I’m so disappointed in you. 41,000 miles and no oil change? Every engine is like a child that needs love and an occasional spanking. You basically slapped your child every every day and called it a stupid little worthless shit. Then locked it in the closet for days, tossing in a few pieces of dry bread to keep that worthless thing alive. I had a new 2005 Toyota Corolla that I sold a few years ago with 299,999 miles (the OD stopped working). I, too, slapped the hell out of that little “good for nothing future drop out.” But to not give it at least a fresh oil change every 10k miles...cold! #MommieDearest

 

I know you're trying to be funny, but let's call the actions out for what they are, scummy and shady. It takes a while to build a reputation and only a few seconds to blow it up. The part that just make me say WTF is buying it outright and passing it on because their won't be any CPO warranty just the basic warranty which is 19k away from being over.

Like HiPSI, you can look in my signature to see my oil samples. I only changed oil every 10k..... and only started testing when the freebies went away. Mine are 30k-90k now.

do me a favor....send your oil to blackstone and tell me what you find out. At that point you have professionals telling you what is really happening and not just your opinion

(I had 220k miles on my E46 M3 when I sold it for my truck and that had a 15k mile oil change interval. Has worked so far)

I’m sure there are SOME trucks that will need a more frequent change on here because they really beat on them, but like the 4x4 idea of “better to have it an not need it”, 98% of us won’t need to go that rout.

Have any of you changed the air in your tires yet? If the tire doesn't have fresh air the rubber atoms can't properly digest the nutrients of screws and nails.

 

I don’t want to make assumptions but my guess is because of how many threads there are on this subject. You can find probably 40 on this site and hundreds of pages of testing results if you use the google. If your going to post something that’s already so thoroughly covered you have to except at least a few jokers just how it is.
