I just got a 2020 tacoma 4x4 sr5. it has tiny 245 tires. I live in the snow/mountains. I need better tires. however I want to put something slightly oversized. Ive seen a lot of youtube action about 285s, with budget boost/spacer lifts. I dunno if i need to go all the way up to 285, but maybe a 275. also have heard talk of a diff drop, not sure what this does, if its required with a 3 inch lift. any advice, info, tips, would be super helpful thanks

    Check build thread!
NO. Do it properly, or regret it. Also, you can fit 265s without a lift i do believe.

Spacer lifts are totally fine for looks. Lots of fellas also off-road with them without issues. It depends on your budget.

Asking TW “what lift” is kinda like going on the Rolex forum asking them what watch strap to buy. You don’t actually need a titanium strap to hold the thing on your wrist.

Don't do it! Just shove the biggest tires that will fit under it stock, like 265-75-R16s or the 255 skinnies.

Unless you are going to spend the money to do it right, you are asking for trouble IMHO.

    My 2 cents

Two of my friends are on high-mileage 2” spacer lifts (strut spacers and blocks) with no issues at all. No problems on road or off road with thousands of kMs. One of the fellas sends his 2G Tacoma big time off-road. He didn’t even know the truck had a spacer lift until I pointed it out.

I dunno.......my local dealer installs spacer lifts, on brand new Tacoma’s, with full warranty.

that's the problem Ive done so much research, and I've only seen almost a 50/50 response. I want a temporary lift for maybe a year, until I can afford a proper suspension lift. just need new tires and want to squeeze the most out of my budget... thought maybe a couple inch spacer wouldn't hurt the truck to much for a short time.

Could be your friends have had no problems. My opinion is that you are putting more stress on your components lifting it with spacers. Your friends haven't had to replace CVs or tie rods or anything like that?

As for dealers putting them on and giving the factory warranty, they are betting that parts will break quicker after warranty expires and get more money fixing things.

I get your point though. I still say NO, don't do it. :D

Assuming you want 285/75/16 tires on a spacer lift, I can tell you from experience that the ride will be absolutely horrible. Most tires in that size are 10 ply (E-Load) meaning they’re really heavy and ride super rough. I have 265/75/16 KO2 E load tires and they really deteriorated the ride quality on my truck. If you want 285’s on your current 16” you’ll have to invest a little more for a nice suspension setup that’ll lift your truck and not ride like a toolbox

I don’t know how people get away with no CMC with 285s. I’ll have to get my caster to 3+ or something. Still rub with a 2 3/4” CO lift, UCAs, and CMC.
