Yup fiber to the home through the local co-op. A lot of the smaller towns have been doing fiber build outs because people aren’t using phone service any more so they depend on internet.

it depends where you are at in Des Moines. Some places have fiber, others are stuck on medicom or century link cable. Pretty sure a lot of oversubscription too as it’s been growing a lot over the last 10 years.

I usually did just enough times per year to never hit status. I went over to Europe a couple years ago and decided I didn’t want to spend the $2,000 for a ticket so got the airline card with bonus mines on sign up and after 6 months or so had enough that the ticket cost me $115 lol

Mediacom was my only option when I was in Illinois in 2008. Never again...

Looks like I'd end up paying more a month if I went that route. Unless I'm inputting things wrong.
@gasparic104 You might be able to figure it better, you know I'm bad with numbers.

We have Xfinity and pay for 1gb/s but we probably actually only get between 600-800mb/s. They decided Jan 1st of this year that they were going to charge us another $20/mth for our service. Saying 'your promotional discount has expired.' So now my bill is $114/mth for not getting the speed I pay for.... But there are no other options in my area with a speed higher than 25mb/s

That’s when you call and complain until they give you it back or more.. I did it once a year with windsteam. They basically told me that could do it for a year at a time but I had to call back each year and ask for it.

Tried. Guy on the phone was a dick. I told him to shove that shit up his ass. But like I said I can't get anything better and they know it. Monopolizing areas so they can set the rates. There's a whole reddit about it.

I'm considering filing an FCC complaint against them.

Oh for sure. I had the same issue. Windstream had most of rural iowa for years and they knew it. I kept a list of every time i had an issue and made them send techs out repeatedly. Sometimes you gotta be a pain in the ass.

Oh I've had a few months refunded due to less than 80% speeds which is FCC regulation when they passed the Net Neutrality thing.

Lower? Have you sat in one? Maybe I'm truck-jaded, but any lower and it wouldn't make it out of our steep driveway lol. She already can't pull in the driveway on my side because it scrapes. Do people actually do that to the 86 family?

I can sneaky install some underglow so that it's only on while somebody is in the driver's seat. I'd get a kick out of somebody at her work telling her that she had cool lights under her car.
Duuuude. I know the struggle. We just refinanced and it took almost 4 MONTHS because by the time they would tell us they needed something else, we'd already have to resubmit our outdated documents. AND this company was already servicing our current mortgage at the time... They have so many boxes that they have to check. It's a nightmare. But good luck! It's exciting.

I've started adding a star shape into my scribbles since our refinance.

And yeah, reading the words on the paper are important. It's a slog, but worth the effort. We're taking half of what our vehicle payments were and putting it toward principle on the loan. Cuts the payoff time almost in half. I wish more of that stuff was taught in high schools. That sort of thing rules our lives and we rarely think about it.

We cut our 30 year loan into a 15 year loan and only increased the monthly payments by around 12%. Plus they gave us a lump sum of like $2k cash after signing. Couple that with the amount we pay extra toward the principal, we should be done in less than 10... It's one of the few things that has gone heavily in our favor.

It honestly just depends on the agents doing the refinance. It's all about getting the right paperwork in the right order. When you have to do that for like 1000 customers, efficiency can be, um, challenging for some.

When it's time, refinancing will work out in your favor. It's worth it.

This is fascinating. Grassroots fiber networks. I have a new rabbit hole to explore.

No kidding, this stuff is incredibly important. I was vastly overpaying on my truck loan to finish in 18 months. Once that was done, I put the same amount into my mortgage. Figured I hadn't missed having the cash thus far, so why not try to pay off the house faster? Should be done with that by June 2024.
Like @Juisebocks said, it depends on who is doing it. I refinanced with a different company than the original loan, and it was a completely painless process.
How many does this make now?
