I have a 2009 Taco I bought new and has 52k on it and is garage kept by this old retired geezer. I tried to open the hood today and got the "pop" release sound when I pulled the lever but hood did not pop up any. I tried this multiple times and tried pulling it up but no luck. I push the hood down and hear it click and try again but can't get it open. Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Rick

I've had them stick before but always pop up with a slight pry with my finger tips.
Could try some lubricant spray on the latch when you get it open, or adjust the bumpers up a tad?

Another thought because I have to do this with my sons 21 year old Blazer sometimes; 2 person operation, after you push the hood closed and it latches, pry up with your fingers while having an assistant work the hood release.

Try slipping your fingers through the top slot in the grill, just on the driver's side of center. You should be able to find the release for the secondary latch.

If the hood still doesn't come up. You may need to use a putty knife slipped into the gap between the hood and the grill to lift.

Once you get it open, adjust the hood bumpers a little. Then a little lube on the latches.

As others have said, there is a secondary safety catch that is a lever to operate, but that's regardless if it's not come up at all.

On another car I had to use a small wedge to get the hood open when I pulled the release. I would force it slightly into the opening and pull the release. The wedge would open the hood just enough to get my fingers under it to undo the latch.

I am going to try some wooden shims while my wife pulls and holds the lever.

Thanks to all who have responded.

Adjust the hood bumpers. The hood should just be slightly above the fenders when closed.

I will check that but I have to get the sucker up first. It is just odd that this is the first time this has happened in the 12 years I have owned it. It is cold today and I wonder if that might have a bearing on make it stubborn?

I didn’t see that you couldn’t get it up even pulling on it. Have someone pull the release while you pull on the hood. That may help.

I got the sucker open this morning. I got my wife to pull the release handle and hold it while tapped in three wooden shims used for installing doors and windows between the hood and the grill I tapped them in a stack tight and then started yanking on the shims and it finally popped open. Everything will get a good dose of lube and a little on the rubber bumpers. I looked and see no way to adjust the rubber bumpers. My next step was going to be to take it to the dealer for an oil change and let them deal with it.

    Thanks everyone.

You can adjust the bumper by just turning them.

The rubber bumper has a spiral cut that "screws" into the hood.

Just give them a 1/4 turn, try the hood, repeat until the hood lifts like you want. Don't go too far, the hood needs to be able to fully latch, not just the safety latch.

Worst case, get a couple of replacement bumpers from Toyota.

gotta say it ...... rubber baby buggy bumpers

Clean the weatherstripping under the front of the hood and put some silicone spray on it to condition it. Mine gets stuck like sometimes, and it's the weatherstripping getting stuck to the underside of the hood that keeps it from popping up.

I never thought of that. If I had known could have run a butter knife down the length of the weatherstripping to cut it loose. Thanks.

I do this a couple times a year to all the weather stripping on my vehicles. Only thing, I'd have to look and see the brand but somehow the last can I bought was more of a greasy spray.
Good suggestion though, I didn't give that thought as a possibility.

Mine does this every time. I have to wedge my fingers between the hood/grill/headlights area and pop it up myself. Basically like where the headlights meet the grill/hood in the upper inside corner.

After I changed my hood I had to adjust the rubber bumpers, they are threaded lefty loosey righty tightly.
This and lube the latch and you are golden. Take it to the dealer? They will dry fuck you on a deal like that.
