Taco Lean solution?

Ok, first off, this is my first thread on this forum and I am not new to forums just this one. I did my research for all the different methods of solving the issue and none seem to work perfectly or permanently. So here are some comments and questions for anyone who has looked deeply into this.

1. Cause? Ok, from what I have read, the cause is due from the extra weight on the drivers side of the truck from gas tank and battery, plus driver.
2. Location? The consensus on the forum from my research seems to be that it is not a suspension loading issue, but a body bushing issue. This is where I want to spend my time discussing.

I just measured my truck. The driver side front is 0.5" lower than the passenger side
The driver side rear is 1.25" lower than the passenger side.

So if the body bushing is the issue, then why is the rear 1.25" lower on the driver side, where body bushings have no affect? A 1.25" difference in the back cannot be due to body bushings. I would expect the front to be lower if it was a body bushing issue. The reason why the difference is more in the back is because my full tank of gas is really heavy and it's in the back drivers side. thoughts?

My truck is very low miles and has not been off road hardly at all based on the underside looks. The bushings are in good condition. Based on the above, I do not believe the location is the body bushings. The cab and bed are not connected and the bed sits solidly on the frame.

The next common forum comment is that the suspension is modified at the factory to compensate for the lean. I cannot find any physical evidence of this. My springs are identical left to right. And if this was true, then my truck would not have a lean.

Others have mentioned on the forum that the left to right leveling of the suspension is a bandaid, not a solution. This may be so, but then what is the solution to this problem. When a vehicle is heavier in the front than the back, the front suspension is fortified to compensate. Add a steel bumper and winch and you add spring rate. So it seems to me that this is not a bandaid, but likely the only solution to this problem.

my presumption is that the stiffer suspension will naturally reduce the lean. So I am going to 700lb springs in front(will be adding armor and a bumper), and doing an add a leaf in back. Both of this conditions should reduce my lean considerably. without actually favoring the driver side with spacers.

Does anyone have any other solutions or other options aside from suspension spacers, which appear to be the main solution.

Although I know that it is always a good idea to go with energy suspension body mounts, I am pretty sure this neither a bandaid or a solution. But if there is specific 3rd gen data to show different I would love to hear that as well.

 

1.25” difference side to side in the rear? That can’t be right.

Oh and fixing the discrepancy side to side in the rear should get the front a little more close too

My 1985 GMC K3500 SRW 6.2 Diesel, with 64k, has wicked drivers lean as it has a driver side-mounted fuel tank.

 

My recommendation: Learn to love it!

 

Lose weight and only fill up the gas tank half full.

 

The OR factory springs are rated over 700lbs(717 I believe).

 

Some funny responses and I could use to lose 20 covid pounds. It is on a full tank.

Here is the craziest part. I feel like the kid in the movie, 6th sense. I now see taco lean everywhere. I see it on Land Cruisers, I see it on Forerunners, I see it on Dodge Rams. It's literally everywhere. I cannot unsee this and now all trucks have a lean. Some are so obvious. Leaving our neighborhood I pointed it out to my wife at the fairly new Land Cruiser in front of us. My neighbors F250. The dodge ram down the street. It's hard to unsee now

 

according to the aftermarket shock spring providers 650 is factory and 700 is the upgrade. My or is very squishy. I like it, but there is no way it is stiff. People with 700 say it is stiff with no add ons in front

But damnit why the heck would Toyota put everything to left? I knew looking at the truck new, this could be a problem. Come on man.

 

Stock spring is progressive rate while most after market are straight hence the stiff ride.

 

Add the weight of the tank full of gas, the battery weight, and your weight. Then find someone that heavy and drag them everywhere you go to level it out.

 

I’m in the midst of doing a 5100 upgrade and I noticed that the front coils have different paint markings on them. Coming from a 4runner, the paint markings usually signified which side the spring was supposed to be on. Maybe that’s the case with these trucks, and if the OP bought the truck used, maybe the previous owner took off a lift and put OEM suspension back on the trade it in. FWIW the paint codes on my brand new 2021 OR DCLB are: passenger side red/green, driver side brown/grey.

If I had to guess, the brown/grey driver side coil spring is slightly different that the passenger side one to help compensate for the heavier components on the driver side of the truck.

Those numbers are for the spring rate of the front. Your (everyone's) problem is coming from the rear.

 

true. I thought you were talking fronts. So I am doing an add a leaf in the rear. I would think that would mostly fix the problem.

 

I did not notice any color in the back but in the front it looks like I have a brown color sleeve on the spring at the top on both sides.

 

There are colored dots, it's not the sleeve

 

ahh, it's definitely the stock suspension as it is bilsteins all around. It will be off the truck by May.

 

I am going to do the suspension in bits. Will do the add-a-leaf first, no change to the front to see how that changes height difference. I am guessing it will not completely recover 1.25 inches, but it should recover half that. I will likely add a half inch spacer to close it up to within a 1/4 inch.

Then I will measure the front and see if that was automatically fixed. if it is 1/4 inch I will leave it alone.
