Why is the TPMS warning appearing now?

I mounted new wheels to the truck about 2 weeks ago and now the TPMS sensor notification is popping up. I didn’t switch the sensors from my previous steelies to the new ones because I was told it wouldn’t fit. so I know I gotta get that done, but I’m trying to stick with OEM, but those sensors are expensive.

myquestion is why is this popping up now versus when the wheels were mounted 2 weeks ago?

Did you put sensors in the new wheels or did you mount them without sensors 'cuz you couldn't swap them from your old steel wheels?
If you mounted the new wheels without any sensors, then it probably took a while for the system to recognize a problem.
I've had no problems with non-OEM sensors BTW.

yeah, I didn’t switch them over because the steel wheels sensors are different.
    which sensors did you use?

It could take a few weeks for the system to recognize them. Maybe you should reset them and hope for the best...

    *edited; OP transferring sensors.

tpms ‘pipe-bomb’ still an option though.

From all of the tire and wheel swaps I’ve done in the last year I learned a few things about TPMS lol

you could technically run any 315MHZ sensors in your 3rd gen truck OEM or not but without being specific 3rd gen TACOMA sensors you won’t be able to get a readout of the actual PSI on your screen (they have a specific program). However, any 315MHZ still will have the tire pressure light come on if you were to get a low psi in one of your tires.

sometimes people on here sell a set of OEM 3rd gen Tacoma sensors for around 75-100. You could also run 2nd Gen 5-15 Tacoma 315MHZ sensors which are on eBay for ~40 bucks a set and you’d be fine other then the readout. I know this because I purchased some second gen tires and wheels with 2nd Gen tpms and had zero issues. Just couldn’t read the actual psi on my dash. Hope this helps!

oh and one last thing. When you put any news sensors on your truck you will have to do a TPMS relearn. America’s tire did it for free for me because they were already mounted. Mounting TPMS I believe is about 15-20 a wheel which includes the relearn portion

So you mounted the new wheels with no sensors?
Since I was mounting Winter tires on the set of steelies I bought used, I made it a point to replace all 4 sensors. My local shop did the mounting of both the sensors and tires. I have no idea what brand of sensor was used. I do know that (on my '06 TRD OR) every tire swap-over the systems has to relearn the sensors, and sometimes the system has to be reprogrammed for the sensors. A real PITA.
Somewhere on TW there is a thread on TPM sensors. At the time I looked at that I did find one manufacturer that made sensors that were adjustable for the angle.

I noticed the OP has an SR(like myself). Does the SR provide any information other than just the warning light? I thought the pressure readings and location were just a function of the upper models. I could be wrong and admittedly stopped reading the manual after about a half hour:anonymous:.

If so, you could ‘technically’ just drive around with your old wheels/tires in the bed if you didn’t want to fool with reprogramming sensors, but what’s the point of having a truck if there’s no room to haul anything?

Seriously though, I DO need to check the manual to find out if the SR will give pressure readings/location. That or just buy a $2 tire gauge!

Hmm didn’t think about pressure readings being a feature of upper models! I have an OR so not sure

I have an SR and the individual pressures don't appear on the dash...but on the Toyota Ap on my phone I can see the individual pressures and tire position

does anyone have any idea how much a dealer would charge to install tpms sensors? :anonymous:

Probably more than you'd want to spend - particularly when you compare it against the cost of a good tire pressure gauge and the time to do a daily walk around.
The light has been on in my '06 TRD OR for several months now - because the 14 year old spare's sensor is dead. Can't bring myself to drop the spare and install a new sensor.

I switched from steel to alloy and the tpms didn’t give me any warning for a week but tire light flashed. I got tired of looking at the flashing light so I paid a shop $300 for new tpms and program.

edit: I did consider just turning the tpms 180 degrees but figured that if I ever got a flat the sensor would break when the bead was broken.

Currently dealing with similar issues. Steelies came off and new wheels + tires + sensors from Belle tire installed. Worked for a day now my app readout is N/A and tire light is on. Called around to dealerships near me and no one knows the Mhz for the stock steel wheels. Going to take my steelies back to belle and they’re going to double check they have the correct sensors on my current wheels or swap the steel sensors over.

Why would the frequency (MHz) be different for steel wheels? Should be the same as the cast wheels since they have to communicate with the same onboard system.

Hands-down, in the last 15 years, I've probably spent more time and money getting TPMS issues resolved on vehicles than anything else. Worst was I helped a good buddy out of a financial jam by buying his '07 Porsche 911 (fantastic car by the way). I never intended to keep it but, of course, 2 weeks after buying it a tire pressure light comes on.......$800 later, I got the light turned off. I kept the car for about 6 months and then sold it for the same thing I paid him so I got to drive a 911 for 1/2 a year for $800 + gas.....not a bad deal....
Hate to admit but Toyota vehicles have been the most problematic. '05 Sequoia seems I have to have something TMPS related fixed every year. Also has sensor in the spare and first cold day, each fall, I have to drop the spare to air it up (might be time to change the spare after 16 years....) Had a '12 Tundra and when I had wheels and tires put on it, it took 3 trips back to the tire shop before they got the TPMS straight.
Ford is by far the easiest. I've got a '15 Mustang GT and as long as you buy the correct sensor, the system reads it and you don't have to do any type of reset. I bought a set of wheels and tires online and just knew the TPMS would be an issue, bolted them on and never saw TPMS light and system read the pressures right away.

Does anyone know if there is a consumer-grade OBD II Reader which can read and clear TPMS errors?

Just take it to discount tire they can flash the sensors to reset if you have them installed . If u need new ones they do it for pretty cheap .
