My 95 5vz tacoma had one when it clogged I put the canister out of a Subaru in its place

It was a tad smaller but had the same ports in the same places

Hmm. Wonder if that would pass with a smog check. They definitely check to make sure the canister is there, just don't know if they verify it's the right one for the engine.

Probably not since I'm sure "check charcoal canister" is somewhere on smog guys book of things that won't pass

Yea I don't have high hopes, but idk for sure. Could just be a "check that charcoal canister is there" and not like a verification that it's the right one. Who knows. Don't know if there's a code for it or something on one of those stickers under the hood. I'll have to do some digging.

nope it will not and setups with that style canister dont have a port for a tank pressure sensor

There was a write-up on yotatech? (One of the dead fourms) about deleting it without getting a code

    Involved resistors and other stuff

Pretty sure if you did that and tucked it under the dash while putting the other one in place you'd probably get away with it

The tank pressure sensor, maybe but it's a great diagnostic tool for finiding vac leaks, and deleting in in CA will be noticed, everything that is on the EVAP vacuum routing sticker on your hood is inspected during SMOG and the tech has notes pertaining to each vehicle's setup based on VIN.

Why is the OEM in my 2000 so much more massive when the same function can be accomplished with that much smaller replacement like in the '95 ones. Other than the tank pressure sensor

Technically it can't because it doesn't have enough charcoal load to meet emissions.

So if it doesn't have enough of a charcoal load, then wouldn't you just have the smell of gas coming out of it all the time? Essentially not being able to do it's job?

No, they rarely vent unless there's an over pressure event, in which case they vent about 2ft into the driver side frame rail. I doubt you could pickup the difference between the two with your nose unless the can failed entirely. It would be something the EPA with their sniffers pick up.

Interesting. I would think that in an over pressure event you would be able to smell gas/evap fumes. Happened to me one time in moab where it was hot out and I had a strong smell of gas from front/middle driver side of the truck. No codes and hasn't happened since so I don't think the canister has failed. Sounds like an over pressure event like what you said.

Since we’re on the topic I’ve been wanting to clean up my engine bay a little. There’s that hose that runs from the intake to a VSV to the canister under the bed. I’m planning on getting a small breather filter to delete that hose that runs across the plenum. I’m guessing it won’t be a big deal. Anybody think that’s a bad idea?

Doesn't that hose pull vacuum from the intake? If you put a breather on it, there won't be any vacuum to the canister.

What’s up guys can someone do me a favor? Can someone measure the length of their v6 4x4 transmission dipstick? I’m trying to finish up my 4x4 conversion and I’m unsure if my 2wd dipstick will work in the 4x4 tranny. I’ve read that the dipstick tubes are the same tho. Thanks:thumbsup:

You may be correct. The system is already pulling vacuum from the manifold on the other side. I figured it was a way to get clean filtered air into the system.

Ah. Well idk. Don't take my word for it. Could work. I don't know much about the EVAP systems on these trucks.

Pulled the oil pan and cleaned it and reinstalled it and the front diff. Trying to get the motor mounts to line up now. Almost done. 20210209_151141.jpg
And the area that required the oil pan clean out.
    20210209_151233.jpg
Hindsight i could have just drained the oil. But i feel better now knowing that i got most of the crap out. It was super easy to do with the diff removed.
