Hit 1,000k miles, fuel economy jumped up 1mpg?

Experts, odd scenario. Love to hear from you all.

My truck just hit 1000 miles yesterday heading to Mt. Hood.

The first 1000miles we would average 18.5 of mostly highway driving up and down the southern cascades and the coastal range.

Since yesterday am when we hit 1000miles, we've been averaging 19.6 of the same type of driving. It's been me in the driver's seat the whole time and our location of driving remains the same.

We're just shy of 1200mi as I type this. Any thoughts? Is it possible the truck is getting more efficient as it breaks in or programmed differently for the first 1k?

    Appreciate the input.

    Cheerio, mates!

Outside of company vehicles I paid no attention to, I've personally owned three new automobiles, all of which appeared to benefit from putting a few miles on the working bits. It makes perfect sense (at least to me) when you think about it.

I thought "Hit 1,000K miles" meant you had driven a million miles. I thought that was really impressive for a 2021 truck.

Different engine, but interesting & comparable trend:
My 2006 TRD OR AC (4.0V6) had a tough time getting above 16 MPG up until 20K miles on the odometer. From that point on to its current 127K miles, MPG started climbing with peaks of around 19.4 MPG, but averaging 16.5 MPG over those 107K miles.
My 2021 TRD OR AC seems to be exhibiting a similar trend. I think it's going to be a combination of the truck getting used to me, and me getting used to my truck.

It is pretty normal to see an increase in fuel mileage once the engine is "broke-in". I've had three new work trucks that all did the same thing and my 2019 Taco did the same thing. My 2017 Silverado WT actually went up 2 MPG when it got past the 2500 mile mark. I don't have any of those now just my '19 Taco. I noticed the higher in altitude the better my MPG gets too. I think the truck was definitely tuned for higher elevations. Down in Louisiana, my mileage suffers.

Id bet different gas more than break in.

If you mean cold vs warm weather fuel composition, my numbers don't correlate. I've gotten high MPGs in the Winter and the overall average is pretty consistent year-round.

According to https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/factors.shtml "break-in" periods do affect peak MPG. I run 89 octane on all my trucks, I noticed it gives me the best mileage for hauling tools and trailers. I also run 89 octane from day one, from multiple gas stations.

Im thinking more like semi old gas that makes the engine pull timing. It is a tacoma after all, i think this would be the first case ever of mpg increasing.

Have no idea what you mean by "semi old gas."
I have 14+ years of data to document my numbers. I think you'll find subsequent posts that'll confirm my experience. That is except for those with highly modded Tacos with 100s of pounds of wheels, tires, lifts and other stuff.

    1,000k on a 2021? That's a lot of miles.

I noticed the same thing when my truck was new.

At first it got 21.7. Been better ever since.

As gas ages, the octane rating decreases which is why products like stabil exist. High compression engines like the tacoma cope with it by pulling timing back.

It was warmer last year when i first got my truck and fuel mileage was around 22 mpg during the first 2k miles or so and when up to a bit over 23 till last fall. Right now temps are below freezing, and only averaging 19.5-20 mpg.
