    Hey there,
So I bought a set of brand new OEM 17" TRD Pro wheels for my 2020 Tacoma Sport a couple weeks ago. I purchased them through a Toyota dealer, just not my local one because they were $160CDN less the next province over. Last Wednesday I had my local Toyota dealership (same one I bought my truck through) install the new wheels using the factory Firestone tires (which have 25k now).

Right away I noticed some shaking that wasn't present before. I monitored it for a day and then called them thinking there was a balancing issue. This morning I took the truck in to have them balanced again, and again there was still shaking afterwards.
It starts around 50km/hr and is intermittent up to and around highway speeds. There was absolutely no shake before, my truck has been absolutely smooth for the last year.

So I called my dealer again this afternoon and they think that it is an issue with at least one of the wheels. So tomorrow I am taking the truck back for a third time, they are putting the factory Sport Wheels back on to compare, and then going from there.

Has anyone had issues with these wheels as far as balancing or issues from manufacturing? I find it hard to believe that a brand new factory Toyota wheel would be bad, and I really never expected to have any issues with these wheels.

Any mass produced wheel can have defects, even toyota oem stuff. Hope they can sort you with a new set!

Hey, not to jack your thread, but I'm ordering these soon too. Mind telling me what size tires you put on them and if you're still on stock suspension? I'm thinking of going 265/70/17 and don't want to lift, level, trim, or rub. I know the offset is different than the stock sport rims, so hoping it doesn't hurt.

Were the tires swapped over from your stock wheels to these? I wouldnt rule out tires if not.

Yeah, as stated in the original post, I used the stock Firestone le2 tires.

So long story short, my local dealer attempted a third balance instead of putting the stock wheels back on. My truck still had a shake that wasn't present with the stock wheels, so they finally put my stock wheels back on, and more or less told me to take a hike. I called the dealer I bought the TRD wheels through and they were more than willing to refund my money, but I would incur the cost of shipping them back ($180cdn). So at that point I was waiting for the service manager from my local dealer to contact me (based off the last conversation I had with one of their service employees), and I decided it was the right time to involve Toyota corporate. Local service manager called and said he is going to make it right and would be in communication with the other dealer and corporate. So I'm waiting to hear something back.

Dang, dude. I hope they get you squared away quickly, easily, and at no cost to you. Sounds super frustrating.

Not OP but I put 255/75/17 on my stock suspension and no issues.

So a final update to my wheel fiasco, and I'll try to make it brief.

-Local dealer consulted Toyota Canada engineering, and said they would not be able to offer a warranty claim because they are not Tacoma parts, and not sure why I was sold them in the first place.

-Toyota Canada customer relations manager called and said I would get replacement wheels at no cost to me (I thought it was contradictory to what my local dealer said, but whatever, it was being dealt with).

-At this point, I wanted nothing more to do with the wheels, and I felt like I couldn't show up to my local dealer with another set to start over again. A refund would have to be handled through the dealer I bought them from, and the manager there was also on board with a no cost to me resolve.

-Dealer I purchased from arranged for me to drop them off at my local dealer to be shipped back, once they received them I got my money back, about 5 weeks after the first mount and balance.

So, I still really like the TRD wheels, and I still have no idea what the issue was because my local dealer never did any sort of test or assessment on them. The dealer I bought them from regularly stocks them and has said they haven't seen any issues, and I haven't seen any other widely reported quality issues either (why I decided to spend the extra on OEM). I also can't help but wonder if I would have had the resolve I did without involving corporate. But that's basically it, hope no one else runs into an issue like this.

Did your dealer use a proper road force balancer? Not only will it give you a better more accurate balance, It will point to any balancing issues. My second gen wont balance properly by a regular balance. Same issue for the last 2 sets of tires I've owned.

Yes, the third attempt was with a road force balancer. It was very slightly better, but definitely not gone. I didn't mention either that before the second balance the tech that took my truck for a drive apparently couldn't notice anything, which seemed odd, but one of the wheels still took a different weight when they rebalanced. I'm certainly not experienced with balancing wheels, but I would think that if there is no shake and it's balanced properly there would be no change in the weight?

If the weights changed it means they got the wheel to balance better. If you read up on how road force balancing works, you will see that any imperfections in the wheels and tires will show up in the balancing process due to the machine actually duplication driving conditions. No wheel and tire is perfectly balanced but some vehicles are more sensitive then others. Tacomas are WELL know to be VERY sensitive to balancing.

Did the truck drive smooth again once you mounted the stock tires back to the stock sport wheels?

To me it sounds like you have a balancing issue that isn't rim related as it would have been clear as day on a road force balancer.

Yes the truck seems to be back to normal with the stock wheels back on. And honestly, I'm over it. For what those wheels cost ($1600cdn with mount and balance), and the fact my truck is a year old, and the only new vehicle I've owned, I really can't be bothered to chase down balancing issues that may or may not go away. Especially when this is planned to be a long term vehicle for me. And like I said, I really can't say where the shake was coming from. Once my stock wheels were back on my local dealer said it must be a bad wheel and to go back to the dealer I got them from. I'm just glad to have my money back and be done with it.

Were the wheels hub-centric in make? I think the Toyota wheels are, as a general rule of thumb. Glad you got back on the road again with a happy hiney.

How much you bought the rims for? It was only rims no tires?
