you need the Vftuner software, and the Tacoma 3.5L tune pack. Vftuner is the program you open that tunes the truck. The tune pack ends up being files on your pc that you load into vftuner to be flashed onto your truck. They are about to simplify the ordering process real soon though, so maybe wait.

    Simplify?? How
I was told I also need a tactix adapter or something which is also around $200?
    Is that correct?

Has anyone tried to tune themselves and had issues? Truck left in limp mode etc?

I was frustrated with ordering from the website and had a lot of trouble getting questions answered. I found someone locally that was licensed and had them tune the truck for me. They were doing a group event through FB. This was a life saver because it saved me a lot of cash and I didn't have to deal with communication issues etc. I am computer literate but not as much as the ppl here LOL so having it done for me was awesome.

The group had options but if you wanted a custom tune then you had to pay extra. I had the regular 87 tune with 33's for my truck. If i wanted another tune instead I think it was just another 50 to change it out.

My humble advice is pay a local to do it for you if you were as frustrated as I was lol..

He also updated my ECU to most current since the dealer refused to do it..

So, someone who is "tech minded" (understands basic programming languages, builds pc and is generally pretty decent with tech) how hard is it to flash yourself?

No because I have not done the latest method. I did the original way. ~Late 2019. Very roughly:

Get link to download software, download and install software.
Download tunes, save on desk top.

Connect to OBD II port in truck with supplied cablelink

Install tune of your choice, idle car for X minutes, drive like a bat out of hell.

I wrote the above, even though not current, because for sure someone will now correct me with the latest.

Should I wait some time/kms before tuning a new truck? I'm eager to tune but only have 2500 miles.

We started tuning our R/D truck with less than 20 miles on the clock. :) I wouldn't worry about a mileage.

Love the way my truck drives after the tune. Excited for some longer road trips to really get to know it.
