The LED SAE J583 Fog Pod & Fog Light Review

It's interesting that the larger headlights have a thicker bezel so they end up nearly the same size. Bluetooth controls have always seemed a little kooky to me, I'm definitely an old fashioned hardwire and relay guy. Looks like a great truck so far. Supercharger on yet?

 

Yeah the Bluetooth light controls are not very practical, I don’t see using it much as I won’t be reaching for my phone when I want more light output for ‘off road’ mode. Agreed on the hardwired standpoint. Supercharger ships next week!

 

On my GX my plan is to get the Offroad Town LED pods. It comes with wiring and an on/off switch. I know I can wire them to the existing fog light wiring but I know it would be better to use relays and run off the battery. The plan was to also get a premade wiring kit from Amazon. It comes with it's own switch but I would want to use a CH4x4 switch to make it look factory. I'm guessing I can just use this harness but replace the switch with the CH4x4 switch? Does this seem feasible or do ya'll have a better suggestion for an easy to wire up while looking factory solution?
How hard would it be to use relays but use the fog light switch that's on the headlight stalk to trigger the relays?

Why run them on a separate switch? LEDs typically draw less than the OEM halogens they are replacing, meaning they can run on the OEM circuit without any issues. No need for additional wiring or lower quality relays, it would be worse not better. If you add the cost of the wiring plus the ch4x4 switch, for only a little more you can get some plug and play SS3 sports which would be higher performing and you could get them in a more ideal selective yellow.

All the fogs in this thread. Your GX takes a 55w H3 fog bulb. No LED fogs covered in this draw 55w, meaning regardless of what you run covered in here (even the high powered Max) the power draw will be less than your stock halogen setup.

I'm running the DD SS3 Pro on my 2021 Subaru Ascent's factory fog light wiring which came with LED fog lights. I can't recall the OEM wire awg but it hasn't had any issues, the oem fuse is 15a. I know the amperage draw is somewhere around 2.5-3 amps so even an 18awg wire would be more than acceptable for that amperage. I have don't think I have seen any forward lighting use less smaller than an 18awg wire, 16awg is probably the smallest I have seen. But I could wrong as I haven't evaluated wiring on every car out there, though I have worked on almost every major manufacture and even some niche market vehicle out there.

I went with there S2's for ditch lights because they're low profile and bright enough for what I need them for. For fogs though I'll use DD SS3's because they seem to be far superior in design.

I looked at them first, but for my use, these S2s will be plenty enough. I also didn't feel like waiting 3 months for them to be in stock. Now for fogs, I'm definitely going DD.

 

OK, I'm trying to pull the trigger on SS3 pods, and struggling to make sense of which to get. My primary usage for fogs is whiteout snow conditions - so I'm thinking that Selective Yellow will give me less reflection back. The better cutoff of the Sport model seems like the right choice for the same reason - but I'm concerned that they don't run warm enough to self-clearing of the snow ... help?

 

Dude I've been in the same boat. I go back and forth with it, but since they're all backordered for awhile, I have some time to think about it.

 

For snow conditions yellow is the correct choice, but you will need Pro or Max to prevent the snow from building up and making them useless.

Can the Pro's be adjusted down to where the top cutoff (although not as sharp as Sports) will still remain below the hypothetical line of being obnoxious to oncoming drivers? I'm guessing since the output is twice as tall as the Sports, that more light would be down on the road too. Just trying to justify the $100 difference for my needs. I live in NC where it seldom gets down below 20* at night during the winter. We also don't get a lot of snow, however thick fog is almost a daily occurrence.
