Has Anybody Experienced "BASS ROLL-OFF" After Installing New Speakers?

I have a 2019 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport with the Entune Premium Audio Head Unit and when I turn up the volume on my factory speakers at about 60-70% volume the bass starts to roll-off or diminish while I increase the volume to 100% the bass frequencies stay reduced.

I have ordered the Subaru Tweeters, Kickers Cs Series 6x9's and 6-3/4 inch speakers.

I won't be adding an amp to this system as of now. I am waiting to hear if the sound improves with spending money on amp(s) and subs.

My questions is, has anybody added upgraded speakers, replacing the factory speakers and when you turned up the volume did you still get the bass roll-off or did it go away because of the new upgraded speakers?

Not sure, but there's really not a lot more bass per se than the stock speakers

 

I guess it depends on what you had for stock speakers before installing your kickers.
Did you have the JBL speakers and what vehicle did you upgrade the speakers in?

 

I am running the exact same set up. It sounded decent. I just recently added the Alpine Power Pack

$320 KTP-445U Universal Power Pack Amplifier

KTP-445U amplifier. I am really impressed with the simplicity of install and small size of the amp. It fit in the dash below the headunit, behind the HVAC controls. I have the high band cross over set at 120Hz and it has really good mid bass punch from the 6×9's. The amp really woke the speakers up. The headunit doesn't have enough power to move the stock speakers let alone aftermarket units. An amp will help.

 

Did the Alpine Power Pack plug and play into the head unit or did you have to do any splicing?
Also, do you have a sub with your system or is it just the Subaru tweets and kickers I mentioned?

 

Just the stock cheap speakers in an Access Cab

 

I purchased the metra plugs both from the headunit and to the vehicle and then wired up those to the amp for plug and play. No modifications to the factory harness required.

As for Sub, I am currently working on a custom fibreglass box enclosure that will fit in the larger cubby hole behind the rear seat. I will be using a Cerwin Vega shallow 10' with a Hertz Dpower 1 amplifier.

There are several install videos on YouTube. Nothing that is directly related to how I installed mine. I used the

$12 Metra 71-1761 87-94 Toyota Vehicle Harness

Metra 71-1761 from the headunit and the

$8 Metra 70-1761 Radio Wiring Harness Fits Select 1987-UP Toyota Vehicles Power + 4 Speaker (Packaging May Vary)

Metra 70-1761 to plug into the stock wiring. The amp uses power piggy backed off the deck and will turn on and off through the speaker signal.

I did find that the my factory deck does put out 12 volts for amp power and 5 volts for power antenna power. I didn't use it those. I used the auto turn on feature.

 

The bass roll off is going to be from the headunit I believe. Any new speakers will still encounter that since the headunit is what’s actually doing it.

Adding something like the power pack or the kicker key will definitely give you a bit more “punch”, but you will still have roll off.

 

There is no real bass roll off on these trucks. What your hearing is probably the speakers breaking apart at higher volumes causing the cone to not produce bass sound.

Wish I could tell you. I don’t know enough about it to be honest. From the little bit I understand, the headunit is what is rolling off, not the speakers. There’s a YouTube channel called something like 5 star audio. It’s a middle aged dude and his assistant. They probably have a video about it.

With that said, the other guy who commented (5nahalf) is super knowledgeable about this stuff. I’ve picked his brain a few times. I’d take his word over mine. Lol

Idk if it’s roll off necessarily, but I do notice (at least it seems like with stock) that once you reach about 70% or so on the headunit, the bass doesn’t increase; only the highs increase.

If you amplify your speakers (assuming you have aftermarket) you’ll notice a huge improvement in bass level though.

 

Its not so much a bass roll off, but rather a combination of the factory speakers cone breaking up and the headunit not able to produce enough power to create the bass. The signal is there for the bass, it just cant reproduce it.

Adding a amp to the factory headunit makes a huge difference.

 

Interesting, that makes total sense, the head unit doesn't have enough power to produce enough bass, hence the roll-off, hmmmmmm, goood point!

Will going from factory speakers to the Kicker CS Series 6x9's and 6.5's help with producing more bass or will it do the same thing?

I am not looking to compete, lol.

You will get more bass for sure. But something your going to keep in mind with the speakers you ordered. The subaru tweeters are fine and dandy, but the 6x9 you got are probably coaxials, so that means there will be tweeters mounted to the center of the 6x9. This is going to give you much more high end than the low end due to having tweeters in the dash, and in the doors. Your best bet to solve this is going to be to disconnect the tweeters from the 6x9. You can disconnect them by simply cutting the 2 wires coming from the terminals going to the back of the magnet.
Do not cut the wires that go from the terminals to the voice coil, those go to the woofer. just the wires i highlighted in red.

If you want to test first, cover the tweeter with a sock, dont seal the front of the tweeter to get rid of the sound as it will just blow the tweeter instead.

 

I have been working on improving my audio too, I went the Infinity Kappa CX90 route with components up front and 6” coaxial in the rear.

There is a perceived “bass roll off” coming from the head unit, but to my ears it’s more from amp compression rather than a set roll off. With just my upgraded speakers, at lower volume I have a very full range sound that fills the cab well, but when I want to crank it, it’s more obvious with the Kappas how my sound stage shrinks and everything is highly compressed.

I’m installing a kicker key 200 sometime in the next few days and I hope that cures my issue, I’m trying to avoid replacing the head unit but being somewhat of an audio snob, this factory crap ain’t cutting it.
