I didn't know that. 15-22 barrels are the same, and I have the spacer as well.

Is it ok to dry fire newer gen semi auto pistols for practice? Or is it bad for the gun?

if it's an AR type pistol rifle, carbine...nope.
The hammer will hit the mag well.
    not good.

A dummy round with elastomer "primer" is OK.
but you have to recock each round. Not so realistic, right?

If a true auto PISTOL - 1911, Glock, etc. It's good.
the firing pin ( hammer) doesn't strike.
    No damage.
    fire away.

Best - to just use live ammo :) .
    It's a good investment.

If Shaw Shooting - Hagerman ID, is taking on civilian folks, it's well worth a visit. Just a random thought. If you are so inclined.

Perfectly safe for striker fired pistols, check your owners manual for hammer fired but it should be fine, if you’re dry firing an AR it will be fine unless you have the upper and lower separated (or hinged up in the rear), the hammer will smack the bolt catch and after some dry fire it can/will snap off.

yeah, don't dry fire that AR, the hammer hits the back of the mag well.
Just shoot ammo and stand up on your two hind legs to do it sometimes.

    .

I'd like to see an AR fired with the upper and lower separated. or hinged up. ? :) unless; "it can snap off", say what? best just not to dry fire an AR with no rounds chambered - or a hammer device to save mag well hit. not trying to be right, just helpful. peace & love. y'all.

Uh, don't dry fire an AR, unless you catch the hammer or use a device to dampen the hammer. or a fired round and a dead primer hit. my .02. Just to save the mag well. trying to help. Personally, firearms frighten me. especially if they are black.

He's not talking about with the upper off.

    If you're saying it's fully assembled, you're 100% wrong.

Does it add additional wear? Yes.
Will it break your gun? Depends on the gun.
Ar15? No. Centerfire pistol? No. Centerfire rifle? Depends on the action.

There's not enough info, but 80% of the firearms out there don't require anything for dry fire.

Get snap caps, A Zooms or whatever and reduce wear on your firing pin, but only specific designs are weak to dry fire, must of which are rim fire.

If the upper is hinged open, prob not a good idea to drop hammer, but if its closed, its not going to hurt it

I dunno, I have dry fired more than a few AR's and the hammer hits the mag well w/o a round chambered. uh, not good.
Of course I have the upper & lower separated and no live ammo.
Seem like wear - is a hammer strike on the magwell, for no reason.

Why break your lower when one could fire live ammo.
    Pistol - yes all good.

my original post was in re: an AR pistol.
    my thoughts referenced same.

If I'm wrong or out of line, OK.

I'm too old to get in a pissing contest.

    especially on a truck forum.
