My buddy drives a Ford F-150 for work, 108k miles on his, only thing he’s done is oil changes in 3 years. We have had Fords in the family for years with no issues.
I’m not selling my Tacoma to buy a Ranger but they don’t look that bad
The new version of the Ranger Tremor did well against the Trd Pro and the Gladiator.

I’ve always wondered what were the mechanical differences between the Hilux and the Tacoma.

My ex’s eco junk engine needed to be replaced at about 15-20k miles, can’t remember exact number. Was a 2016 1.6 escape, coolant got into the oil, what a piece of shit.

    Yeah that sucks for sure.
We have had good luck, we don’t have that engine to deal with.
I lived with my Subaru and the head gasket issues, 13 years I had it. Any work on the engine was painful.

Having grown up in EU and lived in many different countries, the US gets way more cool shit that’s obtainable automotive wise than those countries. Grass is always greener on the other side. Now I do admit there are a number of really cool unobtainable models in EU that we can’t get, but they are just that, unobtainable to the average joe.
But I’m in the minority on this forum knowing the Hilux diesel is a real gutless POS, yet everyone here seems to want small displacement diesels. Probably change their mind after owning one though, but take that into consideration with my opinion above.

I had a 2007 ranger and I know people personally that had fords with N/A engines and all were happy. My ranger was bulletproof, I loved that thing and still miss it. I don’t think ford is bad, I just don't have faith in eco boost engines.

I was actually excited for a new ranger, then found out it comes with 2.3 eco boost and no MT option, hard pass for me. I was also looking at 2018 Ford F-150 fx4 5.0, but no MT option, otherwise I would have probably bought one, great trucks. Was 33k brand new, my taco was 39500.

The Hilux does come with small engines. It is a smaller truck than the tacoma. Few would choose it as a proper off roader... is built mostly a work truck. Few are modded for off-road. low power but cheaper to run. This is its market niche...

Why would you get a Hilux for offroad when sitting right by it at the dealer sits a brand new current-year 70-Series Land Cruiser - with a proper diesel and a manual Gearbox!

    - Yet another dimension of the ‘unavailable’ in the US...

I have two friends who both bought Rangers, one bought his as soon as they became available, the other bought his last Summer. They're both nice trucks, but I'm not a fan of the way Ford styled the rear of the bed or the interior. I've heard mixed reports about the Ecoboost engine and all the recalls make me nervous. I also wish they had offered a Ranger with at least one package where you could get a manual trans.

From what I've seen the biggest reason Ford isn't selling more Rangers (although here in So.Cal. I see a lot of them on the road) is because people get up-sold into an F-150. That's one of the things which impressed me about the dealership where I bought my Taco is I was very clear in what I wanted and that's what they had waiting for me when I arrived for my appt. (I bought my Taco last April and all the Dealers in my area were only doing sales on an appointment basis). They didn't pull any of "Well for another $100 a month we can put you into a Tundra BS". It's actually one of the reasons they got the sale.

It's a silly sticker I had made just so I'm not another run of the mill TRD OFF ROAD, SPORT, SR5 or PRO
that was a huge mistake every damn time I stop for gas, beer, ammo, porn, WHATEVER somebody I another taco has to ask WTF is it? Having to tell them the truth some want to know where to get one some want to buy the sticker some are so baked they can't get thier head around it & the rest think I'm a taco field tester trying to be under cover by denying that IT REALLY does exist

    Their coming off today..........

I guess it depends on way too many factors, for any vehicle. Where it was built, when, what the known design flaws were at release, what acceptable failures were at release...etc.etc. My daughter's Wrangler went back to the dealership 8 times in 3 years. ABS issues, electrical issues, a bad rim (from the factory) CONSTANT leaks (you'd think after decades of research they could design a convertible top that doesn't leak - EVERYONE else has). If I was given a new Jeep tomorrow it would go straight to Toyota to get traded in. I had a Ford Explorer that was similar. In the shop at least once a year - it was like it had heart disease and needed to see the cardiologist every 12 months. Royal P.O.S.

In my family, there have only been two name brands that have managed to last or offer some sort of reliability - Toyota and Honda. That's after owning almost everything from Audi to Volkswagen(another overrated piece of crap).

Not sure if they mentioned any brand, but they look like firestone winterforce.

for all it's flaws, the Tacoma is still the best truck in class, overall.

I do like the Fords, certainly the best american trucks.

Yeah I've messed around with some hilux for a few years. If you're only driving under 45 and on and off it's alright. Anything more it isn't the greatest.

Man you guys have had bad luck with other manufacturers! We have a 2014 vw golf wagon tdi and it's awesome.
My Tacoma in 7 years has had no issues as well, awesome reliability.
