I have a manual 2021 Toyo pickup. I have noticed in my last few cars that the stick shift has changed a lot the later model the car/truck is — generally not for the better.

I’m thinking it’s a mix of computers instead of old school throttle cables, EPA pressures for best gas mileage, etc. that create these weird “situations.”

First gear is just strange. Seems if I don’t run tach to 3 grand, the throttle hangs shifting into second.
Other times, when shifting through gears, the timing of throttle doesn’t match up exactly when my foot is off the gas pedal — it kind of lags.
Seems like you can’t downshift like the old trucks; you need a lot of brakes with it.

Am I just too nit picky?

Anyone experienced any of this and rectified it with a tune?

First gear is way too tall in these trucks

tuning and the ADM makes it significantly better. Since tuning 2nd gear is way more useful and doesn’t bog all the time

I believe the rev-hang is intentional and helps with emissions.

My auto has no rev hang.

It is an emissions thing... and it totally sucks

Well at least we can all now be honest. Whether AT or MT......Toyota and the EPA is giving us all the green wiener when it comes to the gearing and throttle response.

Every manual vehicle shifts different. Learn it and enjoy it.
I have had maybe 20 different manual vehicles. They were all unique. From a 15 speed road ranger to a 4 speed tarmac. Just figure it out and move on.

It took me a whole two days to adapt to the Tacoma shift. You can do it...

I picked mine up two weeks ago.

It’s fine, and I’m coming from a ‘high performance’ German vehicle background. No tune, no accumulator delete.

Adapt to the vehicle, not the other way around.

Hah. In my social circle, when someone “gives you the green wiener” it isn’t good. Nobody wants the green wiener! Never really thought if the saying translates across North America or not. TW is funny that way. I think it’s self explanatory.

I mean I would agree with you, but this IS Tacoma World. SOMEBODY here wants the green weiner...for sure.

Totally agree (and have for a long time). They both have quirks and things that make you wonder if they actually tested these trucks. I don’t really have any complaints about my MT these days. My AT would have definitely gotten gears and tuning (neither was available when I decided to trade) and it would probably be fine.

LOL and the thread goes sideways, just like that.

@SSTacomamama congrats on the truck. I had a 2020 MT for a year, and while I did get used to it...it was the most quirky stick shift I have ever owned.

Advice would be get a tune like @Shellshock said and do the clutch accumulator delete mod. That will help get you the feeling of connection and feedback you're lookin for.

After a while, you'll kind of learn the behavior of the truck...but I highly suggest that accumulator delete mod. Before that, it felt so inconsistent taking off in first gear. Weird feeling. Felt like I was just really bad at driving stick lol.

The first 30k I had my truck I constantly wondered if I was just bad at driving lol

The rev hang is to promote higher EGTs and lesson carbon emissions. It’s been going on for the last 5 years at least. My 2014 accord seems safe but damn my old 2010 Tacoma I swear the government gives it periodic updates.

Right??? I only had 15k when I traded in. It still felt weird sometimes taking off in first gear. I should have done that tune, but oh well. ADM definitely made a difference. I didn't go dead in reverse in my driveway anymore  What a noob.

With the tune, can you start in 2nd gear from a stop? Easily?

Yes. It totally changed 2nd. Like driving in parking lots I can use 2nd without it bogging down. I basically use 1st if I’m at a full stop and that’s it. Rolling stop, etc I always use second.
