Because I had places to be and I was banking on the brakes letting go eventually, and I was right. Also, once the drums are a little hot, they don't grab so well and you can go about your day.

Anyways, the dealer adjusted the preload on the drums a few weeks ago: the parking brake handle now operates like it did from the factory (gotta pull it way up!) and no more randomly-locking-up drums. Hooray.

It’s actually the shoes sticking to the drums. This is a problem since we moved away from asbestos shoes. The modern shoes are metallic compound and rust to the drum surface with any road salt or condensation moisture that gets into the drums in the winter. Opening them up and cleaning them can help.

Add me to the list of owners with rear drums that lock up in the cold. Toyota has already had the truck to replace a bunch of axle/brake components, and the problem returned just a few days later.

Got an appointment next week to have Toyota look at it again. Supposedly the dealer is talking with Toyota engineers to figure this out. That's reassuring. The platform used by the 3rd-gen was released in, what, 2005? They've had 15 years to figure this out.

I park on a slope every day at home -- not using the parking brake is not an option, nor should it be offered up as a "solution." None of my previous vehicles have had this issue. I'm not doing anything ridiculous like driving through water, washing the truck, or even driving on wet roads before parking it.

Not sure if its been mentioned...I would try engaging 4 high after I've parked on the slope, then leave it in first or reverse. 4 tires resisting the roll instead of 2. No e brake.
