TPMS Installation in unequipped truck

Hi all,

This may be odd to most of you but in Canada, some Tacomas do not come equipped with TPMS. I had it on my 2019 OR (AT) but my 2021 Sport (MT) does not have it. This is the case with all MT model Tacomas and (I think) some base model configurations.

Anyway, how easy, costly and/or feasible would it be to install a TPMS? I have zero issues checking tire pressure myself (already had to because the dealership apparently couldn't or forgot to) but I do miss the convenience of it on the dash.

I'm pretty sure I have seen completely stand alone systems for vehicles that never had TPMS. I don't know what parts of the factory TPMS system your truck may or may not have.

Thats weird that it doesnt... its been mandatory since 2007

 

Aftermarket tire pressure systems are available. I put one on the wife's RAV4 for use with her winter tires (wheels with no sensors). She likes it so we use it year around. No dash display, tho. It plugs into the cigarette lighter (due to PC that probably has a different name).

Is there no display of tire pressures available on your vehicle? My 2020 (US model) has that.

My TPMS light has been flashing for 4 years. LOL!!

 

I am not a fan of TPMS. Serves a statistically miniscule issue (preventing tire blow-out accidents from under-inflated tires) and can be so expensive to repair that most people simply ride around with the light on when it fails anyway.

 

I'm not sure. Is there a good way to tell? I know when I first brought the truck home I scrolled over on the info screen to where I was used to it being and there was something else there instead (perhaps it was blank? I'll have to double check). I have access to Techstream; maybe I can tell through that?

That's incorrect. I've heard in the USA that's the case, but in CAN it's a nice-to-have-but-not-required feature.

No, none at all. As I stated, some of the Canadian models do not have TPMS. The 'premium' (Sport, OR, Pro, Limited) AT models do but none of the MTs do. I'm just checking and it would appear the SR and SR5 models do lack TPMS regardless of transmission.

 

These aren't bad solutions. Thanks. I'd rather it all be fully integrated than an extra piece of hardware but if that's too difficult or not possible I'll definitely consider.

I liked it for the quick glance to see where the pressures were at, especially since the first winter I had with my OR the light came on because my tires were dropping under 25. It's also nice to be able to see how much more pressure is gained once I've been driving around a while and the tires (and air) have warmed up and expanded. I'm nervy about over or under inflated tires unless there's a specific purpose (like if one was offroading)

 

Tire thumpers! We use them on some of the equipment at work. So satisfying giving a good whack.
I do carry a gauge with me for checking pressure. I don't use it often but when the seasons change it's nice to be able to keep an eye on things

 

If your arms are long enough, u can check em while driving too.

I will admit that the newer systems, where you can see the TP of each tire are nice to have. I was commuting home in my '17 F250 and had just come off a hwy exit when the warning popped-up on the dash as I must have just rolled over something because I could watch the pressure drop about a PSI a second...good thing those tires took 65 PSI and there was a tire store about 1/2 mile up the road.......

 

Yeah, I hear you. Two days before trading in my OR I was doing 100 down the highway when I heard something odd and shortly after the dash lit up and showed me exactly what was up and I was able to pull over safely and change it out. That's another reason I'd like to add it if possible. I'm going to see what the truck shows now and maybe dig around with Techstream later to see if it has the capabilites even.

I doubt I'll get another flat anytime soon but I wasn't expecting that one so who knows

You should travel the highway loop I take to work and back every day......100MPH is about the average.......really.....

 

It would be interesting to know if your ECU even has it. I doubt it does but who knows? I think to get it fully integrated, your ECU would need to support it. Techstream should be able to show you if it's there.
