OVTune 3.5L Tacoma Supercharger and Twin Turbo Systems

Any updates here?
Kind of dead.

 

Been putting miles on my truck, just took a long datalog of regular driving and sent back to Mat with some feedback. Small stuff, like some unevenness out of boost in a gear here and there, some odd behavior in another gear at specific rpm's, that sort of thing. Nothing that hasn't been experienced by any of the testers for the n/a tune development.

It definitely drives really nicely, and boost gets you going smoothly when using it in daily driving scenarios. Especially in the higher gears, you start scooting along so smoothly that your passenger is likely to not notice much other than your wastegates purging when you let off lol boost consistently comes on at >30% throttle, so electing to stay out of boost is easy if desired, and yet entering boost isn't a chore either. Power delivery is available low in the rpm band where so many people have wanted it.

I expect that this kit will begin gaining much more popularity as kinks get ironed out and more #escargottacomas begin boosting around

 

we all know it was a long painful road for you to get to this point, I for one appreciate your feedback and driving experiences.

The borderland got a ton of snow and ice yesterday, almost all of it still there this morning when I got up for the gym. Ice on the roads, snow and ice encasing the truck. Obviously the turbos love the freezing cold air but more importantly, the truck remained perfectly controllable/drivable in these conditions, in case that's anyone's concern. No doubt, tires help and do their part, and you can stay out of boost if you'd like as an extra measure of safety, but even with 3-6 lbs of boost being used it didn't feel any different, like it was about to spin out on me or anything.

Oh and I can also confirm from yesterday that blasting through snowy sandy desert trails is still plenty of fun with the spooly bois

 

I am starting to get the feeling this kit isn't ever going to be finished or at best more than a few dozen shipped. It has been over a year since the initial kits were sold and not all of them have been shipped (AFAIK). That is unfortunate, I really had my heart set on turbos. I will wait a few more months but unless this makes some serious progress I will, reluctantly, have to go with a supercharger.

 

I understand your frustration, but keep in mind, the supercharger was likely in development since the 3rd gen was released. It only became available a handfull of months ago. The difference is, Mat has done most of the development out in the open, and the others had everything behind closed doors. In reality, the time to market (initial release) of the TT setup was remarkably fast.

If I had the need, and spare cash I would have jumped on the first batch. Once the truck is out of warranty and kits are available, I may still do it. From the feedback I have seen, it's a fantastic option and IMHO superior to the SC (and tune) available.

I think this has turned into more of a product development then @OVTune anticipated and mesh into pandemic and supply chain issues for parts. Really is a cool system and adjustable HP/Torque gains, but like any performance parts added to a vehicle, this definitely comes with some big risks the owner should be aware of before they dive into it. You really should be prepared for the worst case cost if something goes wrong inside the engine. IMO this is a good fit definitely for someone that can afford that second recreational play tinker vehicle. I don't think I will be adding the either of the turbo or supercharger to my truck. I can wait for the next Tacoma Gen and drive a few mph slower on a daily basis for the lack of power. I still love driving the 3rd gen and I purchased a Toyota for reliability and this seems like not a good investment for my situation.

 

There has been set backs, without a doubt. Some related to the pandemic / supply chain issues, some completely our fault. In hind sight I should really not of offered a kit that allowed people to make the customization to it that they did, and should of selected a few different suppliers for some components.

The turbo kits were sold in May. That's not over a year.

The kit likely won't return until late spring 2021. Some things are being revised, and we are working out some tuning kinks with current users. Mainly some extreme-cold weather stuff.

I still have 100% confidence it will be the best forced induction setup for this truck for people looking to make big power. It's not the same level of "bolt on and go" as the SC, but never was nor intended to be.
Also I'm pretty sure that Magnuson, Harrop, etc had their kits *finished* before our manifolds were even casted. They were waiting on software.


There has also been things happening unrelated to the kit that have caused additional set backs. Supply chain delays, local shipping offices no longer accepting of certain packages... weather problems. the "benefits" of living in a rural area.

@OVTune Can you provide some detail on the extreme cold weather challenges? Very interested.

I have a question, maybe someone can answer it here.

Are there any of these kits in use currently, daily driven etc? Aside from the Ovtune truck? Or Meso's that blew up shortly after installation..

@mZiggy is for sure. He is two pages back talking about how it’s driving in the snow and ice with turbos.

There is at least one more. Maybe another.
That is daily driving it already.

Anybody have a pic or the name of the gaskets used in the TT kit where the turbo meets the DP? I took off the driver DP to make a bigger "dent" and the gasket broke. Thanks.
