Mounting radar any and all advice welcome!

Ok so Im not trying to spend a lot on mounting my escort 8500 x50, the suction cups are horrible lol.


So anyone have any ideas how to mount it?

I thought about mounting it to the roof area but the bracket is not long enough.

Uploading pics now of what Im talking about.

I thought about zip tying it to the rear view mirror but I decided against that for obvious reasons.


So any advice?

Go buy one of those grip pads from walmart for a buck. Put it on ur dash then get some velcro sticky things. You can stick them to whatever and put the other half where ever and you have a custom mount. The grip pad is nice cuz the clue from the velcro wont make marks on your dash, then attach the other velcro end to the radar and it stays great.

I have a passport as well, and yes the suction cups suck Everytime it gets really hot/cold I get in to find it has fallen off the dash.

 

What are the requirements? Does it need to face out the front window? Do you need to be able to see it - or just hear it? Does it take wires (I don't see any in the picture)?

What about mounting it above your rear-view mirror? Or why not just double side tape it to the dash in the lower left side? That is where I mount my GPS via a suction cup on the window.

If it does not need to "see" out the window, there are a lot more options. I've never used one of those so i'm not sure what it requires. I prefer to drive the speed limit (or no more than 10mph over it).

 

Now that's funny! Most of the time I find they are a waste of money. It's really easy to get ticketed even with the radar detector on. It may work if the cop is sitting there with the radar on and just pointing out at traffic but most of the time the cop sees you, turns on the radar and captures your speed before it even has the chance to alert you. By the time you slow down it's too late. So you still get one of these...

Oh, and all the ones I have seen use the suction cup. You could try some heavy duty velcro and put it in the dash???

It does need to see out the window. All K and Ka band radar in use on the roads today can be detected with much more distance and accuracy if there is nothing between the detector and the radar beam.

Remember, radar travels consistently until is reflected or refracted, you want your detector to see it before it has a chance to degrade much.

Center of the windshield is best, try to avoid mouting it behind tint or anything metallic.

 

While I was browsing the blendmount site I went through the following thought process:

1. Wow this thing is pretty cool
2. It's so simple too
3. I will totally buy this if it's under $25, let me put it in my cart. It's probably more like $10 anyways.
4. HOLY SHIT THIS THING IS 90 F-ING DOLLARS?????? HAHAHA
5. I will put this $90 towards beer instead.

I have a V1 and I hard wired it in and it is mounted to the left of rearview with suctions just below the tint. I think it works great and has saved me many times.

 

This looks like it's worth $90? It's a cool idea, but I bet it costs basically nothing to manufacture.

 

Personally i do not like the mounts that hold the radar off of the rear view mirror. It puts your radar right out there in plain sight of cops and theives to see.

I mount mine up in the tint strip, it's higher on the windshield so it gets better range and the tint strip makes it so it cannot bee seen outside the car. The tint strip does not affect the perfermance at all. I just put my valentine up there with the suction cups and hardwired it and it works great.
