Thanks for that. He stated authoritatively that every change he’s ever done the oil psi came up within 1 second. Did he have a gauge on the oil filter? No. Then how can he say that? He can’t.

VERY True. There are so many shows/ news features about people weeding through everything in their home that was not made in America...they almost always end up with like a Craftsman tool set and an old tube-TV. Sad. We may be at risk of hijacking the OP's post... LOL. Oh yeah...oil. Not touching THAT can-o-worms.

    Sorry.....should have stated I have a 1GR 4.0.

And yes....I remember both of my 2.7s as having a capacity of just over 6 quarts. I think I just used an even 6 as there is always some residual left in the engine. I personally used 5/30. (Cue the "you're smarter than the engineer" comments)

As for viscosity? The 1GR, 2GR and 2TR are all very easy on oil and all started out life using 5/30. In reality, viscosities ranging from 0/20 to 0/40 all perform very well in them. 0/20 is recommended because of it's slight increase in fuel economy and slightly better startup protection....though in the real world both are probably negligible.

If you hang out on Bobistheoilguy site you'll see that most of the same engines that Toyota recommends 0/20 in N. America actually have a variety of heavier recommendations in other parts of the world. Many BITOG'ers are using 1 or even 2 grades up from 0/20 with excellent oil analysis reports. To be fair....you see excellent UOA reports on 0/20 too.

Point is....run the brand, type and viscosity that makes you feel good. And change it as often as makes you sleep better at night. Just stick to at least the 1 year/10k interval at a minimum.

The rest is just over thinking.

I’m running 10w40 in my 4.0 taco and its has been happy with it. Imo for more abuse a heavier oil is better. Bit as you said it will give less mpg (if you even notice it who knows)

Here's the rub...and follow the logic.
You seem like a nice enough sort that wants to learn right?
    Here is the whole story...
Let's talk about only 3500 5000 and 10000 oil change intervals (OCI) to start.
Toyota is known to be one of the more reliable brands, and most will agree on that fact. We all pretty much agree 300K is achievable with some maintenance.
Toyota recommends two OCI's, 5K severe and 10K normal.
Well, damn. Toyota is most reliable and even they recommend 10K OCI's? If 3.5K OCI's were good, wouldn't a company known for reliability recommend a shorter OCI?! Think about that for a minute.
Toyota recommends 5K for severe duty and that's fine, except some people think because they went offroad for a few miles or put some suitcases on the roof then that's severe duty lol. Severe duty is pulling a trailer every day or hauling around a half ton of tools all the time or even super short trips in a city. Those are severe duty, not when you do those things only briefly every now and then!
So now the die hard are sputtering "but but... piece of mind! We do it for cheap insurance and piece of mind!" Well damn. Then why don't you carry two spares? Why don't you carry an extra battery or extra front bumper?
The phrase "piece of mind" to me, means those people are just too damn lazy to do the necessary research to gain knowledge so you can be comfortable in your decisions.
So, in order to become comfortable with your decision, go to a website called bobistheoilguy.com and get educated. Best site to learn about oil and OCI on the internet and best part... they are not sponsored by oil companies!
So why do guys change their oil at 5K or 3.5K even though they cannot offer any evidence that the more frequent OCI's add additional life to their engine? One of their big arguments is " we tore an engine down and you wouldn't believe the wear!" Lol there's a difference between a massed produced Toyota engine and a backyard built race engine. Otherwise, they have zero proof.
The 10K OCI has lots of proof that it is the right OCI. There have been hundreds and thousands of Oil samples and the analysis shows that 10K is fine. We have lots of members over 200K that have not had any problems using 10K OCI.
So, if those 3.5 and 5K guys have no proof, Toyota engineers recommend 10K, the oil samples say 10K is fine and bobistheoilguy says 10K is fine, why in the hell do they change their oil at 3.5 or 5K? And, they make sure to tell everyone they do it too!
The answer is simple. Those guys are tinkerers. They are proud they can change their own oil! And truthfully, vehicles have gotten so complex there is little a driveway warrior can do to a vehicle anymore.
Personally, I have had a garage change my oil ever since I could afford to have it changed, so for the past 40 years or so.
The truth is it takes no skill or knowledge to change oil, so, to me, it takes the same skill to dig a ditch as change your oil. Grunt work. There is reason the oil change tech at a dealership is the least skilled tech. It's because no skill is needed!
So why then, do those guys feel the need to tell everyone they change their oil early? Even though they have no proof it does anything to help and requires no skill? It's simply a way to justify a reason to tinker with their truck lol. That's the real reason!
I have zero problems with guys changing their own oil early. Hell, change it every 500 miles if they want... just don't come here trying to convince other people you way is better when you have no proof and 10K OCI will do just fine.
    Thanks for reading my opinion!

I am not scientist or mechanic, nor a Toyota engineer... I have it every ~5000mi or 6 months, which ever comes first, which is the miles.... Easy peasy and a little thing to help my small piece of mind when I fire her up everyday

All i can claim that mobil 1 synthetic is good stuff. I changed my 2001 4.7 tundras oil, and filter once a year every 20k miles for 19 years till i sold the truck with nearly 300k miles, and it still ran great. Looking at the oil it wasn't as dirty as our domestic 5.3 chevy trucks that were seeing service every 5k miles.

I just can’t understand why some people do this. Are you conservative with oil resources or just think the oil is still good for that time?

Maybe we need to start a support group.

I still get nightmares about oil sludge once in a while. That's when I go change my oil.

Because the oil is still good and you can't prove me wrong unless you have fallen victim to marketing.
You know Toyota is conservative and they say 10K. It's not a stretch to say oil can go 20K. I have seen Blackstone reports telling the owners to go 15K between changes and if you only drive interstate? Not a stretch at all. Quit thinking 1975.

Modern synthetic oils can be good for that length of time. I'm not sure if a low quality grade 3 can go that long but a high grade one or any grade 4 or 5 certainly can in the right application. Heck my Nissan GT-R only asked for 1 every 6000 miles and that's a twin turbo 550HP car. High heat, and high pressure. And in testing lots of guys find the oil is good for double that with Blackstone testing. I'm going to go ahead and venture a non turbo, low performance engine can go further.
