Recent issues with Gas Mileage!!

4 door 2009 Tacoma Sport 28,000 miles. Up until my last file up I was getting around 350 miles per tank, this last fill up I got 265 for a whopping 15.3 MPG. I was getting easily 19-20 MPG. I drive mostly highway 60 miles per day averaging 75 mph.

I am guessing this has to do with the "winter" gas on the East coast.

Anyone else having a significant decrease in MPGs??

 

Normal.

Cold temps, winter gas, pushing thru snow all drop your mileage no matter what u drive. Getting 2 mpg less in this cold and snowy Dec than was in a relatively 'warm' Nov.

 

Having recently sold my 05 4 cyl and switching to an 05 6cyl/auto I've been keeping track of mileage. I used to get 21-22 with the old truck and I'm now getting 18.5-20 with this one, winter gas and all. Most of my driving is highway though.

 

I would agree with that however here in NJ we have not received any snow, In the summer blasting the AC all the time i was still getting 20 MPG. But to lose almost 5 mpg doesnt seem right. Ill run super in the next tank..

I get 12-15 I love it, dont even care its a truck and I love my truck!

 

You are also getting close to a spark plug change IIRC (30K)...Might be messing with your mileage too.
I need to swap mine out cause I've had the same drop off in mileage performance...and see how it changes.

 

It's funny, I've been wondering the same thing. When I got the truck in July, I was getting about 390-400 miles out of a tank. Now I'm getting 360 or so. I also went from the 245/75r16's to the 265/75r16's. So I was trying to figure out how much was from the tires and how much was from the winter.

 

Wind and crappy winter gas.

Somewhere between 70 and 75 mph our trucks become flying bricks. If you're maintaining 75 mph into a headwind its going to drink gas. Dropping the speed down to 70 will get you most of the mileage back again.

Last weekend I went west on the PA Turnpike into the wind at 75 mph - 15mpg, coming back at 70 mph with a tailwind - 19 mpg.

 

I just did a road trip with my 06. It has a lift on the front and 265/75/16 Revo's 2 AT tires and i got 16 mpg driving 75. Don't know if the plugs have been replaced or when but i'm going to do it soon. Truck has 78k.

 

When you guys say 'tank', just what does that mean? You don't empty your tank and push your truck to the pump, right?

Is a 'tank' to you guys 13 gallons (when the gauge is on the 1/4 line)?
Is a 'tank' to you guys 17 gallons (when the e light comes on)?
Is a 'tank' to you guys 18.5 gallons (when the gauge is on the E line)?

Giving the MPG or signing up to Fuelly.com is a much better way to relate your mileage than the word 'tank'... Thanks!

Oh, and you guys with 4X4 DC V-6 AUTO.s that get 20+ mpg, you are amazing! So don't complain... my average (city/hwy.) has always been 16-17 in all three of my Tacomas here in Calif. I am lucky if I ever get 19+ pure highway... happend twice is all.

 

tank meaning 17 gallon fill up each time give or take .2-.6 each "tank"

 

Funny you just posted this becaues I have been thinking the same thing for the past few weeks. It is definitely the winter gas because I get consistant 19.5-20 mpg all year till the winter. I am averaging the same 15.5-16.5 mpg.

 

I have been getting around 20, mostly around town (4cly 4x4) but I drive pretty light, by nature and truck is still new.

I did stop and check the tire pressure, and adjust. It should be 30 but was 28-29. That little bit of adjustment made the ride feel smoother (maybe in my head) and probably can account for minimal increase in mpg.

Other cars i have owned seem to have a loss of tire pressure more in the cold and I figure I can do something about that while the winter blend of gas is completely out of my control.

 

Congratulations on being so wealthy that your bills don't matter, or for working from home such that driving a vehicle is a luxury and not a daily necessity. Or for caring so little about your vehicle that you don't monitor even the simplest of indicators of its operational health.

For the rest of us who do have to worry about expenses, who have to drive sometimes long distances to work every day, and who watch basic indicators of vehicle health so that we can keep them on the road for a long time, MPG does matter.

 

Might have to check mine. I got it at 36k not sure if it was done.

Its a TRUCK, omg yes a TRUCK, trucks are not designed to get great MPG.

You want good MPG? Get a hybrid, a civic, a car of any type that has 4 cyl.

I went from a civic getting 25-35mpg to a truck that gets between 12-15, hmm I wonder why I get 12-15?

Hmmm lets see
1st its a truck I know I'm not going to see 20mpg (unless on straight highway)
2nd its winter the fuel is crap.
3rd its a v-6 with the 4.0

No because it's a truck I was not expecting it, I got my truck because I LOVE my truck, regardless of mpg.

I got my truck 3 weeks ago almost 4 and I have already put 2k miles on it so dont tell me

The theme gets old real quick. We get it, you don't care. So what was the point of you posting in this thread? What is the point of you or people like you posting the same sort of comment in every fuel economy thread that comes up?


P.S.--If you really are getting 12 to 15 mpg, even if it is all city driving, that is pretty low unless you have a heavy lead foot. That kind of mileage would make me look for possible causes like a dirty air filter.

 

I've been reduced to getting a mere 24.5 MPG's on winter fuel...

Was getting 26-31 in summer.

 

I was letting him know what my average was between 12-15 it is city driving I get on it but not that bad.

I will check the filter thanks or the heads up!

I just got it about 3 weeks ago so I should give it a once over and should change the spark plugs as well wonder what kind is best?

Maybe that will get my mpg up again
