    Hello Everyone,

I tagged onto an older tread last night and wanted to post this fresh to gain more opinions on the setup. I'm new to the Tacoma World forum and look forward to chatting with everyone. I purchased a leftover 2019 Tacoma pro last fall (Portsmouth NH Toyota) and have thoroughly enjoyed my time thus far with the Tacoma (lots of fun). In preparation for some yard work this spring, and equipment transportation needs, I purchased a Cam Superline dump trailer (with built-in pull-out ramps!). Specifically, I was thinking about mulch (5 yds per load), moving the zero-turn mower (~1200lbs), yard debris, small loads of dirt (2 yds. per load) and finally a Kubota LC2610 (~2300lbs with loader).

The trailer is a P5CAM612LPD (not the HD version). Weight is ~2800lbs. I needed the 12’ trailer to have enough room for the Kubota LX2610 and loader. The 10’ P5CAM10LDP (~200lbs lighter – 10’ trailer) was just too short for the Kubota. I don’t plan to travel on highways often with most of my weekend endeavors being to landscaping supply places, MB Tractor in Plaistow NH and the dump (yard debris, etc.).

    Notes:
The trailer dealer was recommending Timbrens to replace the OEM suspension stops.
    1. Question: Is this a good idea. Or will the trailer be a problem for the tuck based on the intended usage?
    2. Break controller being added this week at the dealer. The trailer has electric breaks. I transported the trailer home Friday without breaks and no issues.
    3. Do you see the P5CAM612LPD as a problem for my Tacoma pro?
I know many on this forum have a lot of experience with Tacoma trucks and heavy trailer loads. I find a mix of Tacoma tow capacities online listing 6400lbs, 6600lbs and 6800lbs. Based on my expected usage, the largest trailer load is ~5200lbs. Please let me know the forums thoughts. This is my first trailer and hope that I made a good choice based on my expected usage. If this setup is a bad idea please let me know when you have a moment.

    Thanks
    Cary

I don’t know what the true capacity is but try to stay under 6,000 lbs if you can.

Some quick googling puts dirt at ~2500 lbs per yard. So you’re at 5k load plus 2.8k trailer = 7.8k total. That’s 1k over the heaviest hauler of the Tacoma’s. Your Pro is probably a 6400 max. Check your door jamb sticker.

I think hauling 5k around city streets and back roads at those speeds is feasible if it’s not a daily or weekly event. If you’re talking about pulling near 8k... that’s a different story. One time deals because you ‘have to’ are one thing. But it looks like you’re setting up for some regular work.

Your equipment plus trailer falls under the max and is probably not so bad if you’re careful and practiced. But 2 yards of dirt is going to stress your truck when done regularly.

Tongue weight needs to be managed.

PS, with a double axle, loads are easier on the tongue and easier to tow. But it’s easy to goof up and have them drop your yardage too far forward. The Tacoma payload is only around 1k, so it’s easy to go over that if you’re not careful.

    Have fun!

You have way more trailer than a truck to pull it. You could easily put enough weight in the trailer to seriously bring the Tacoma to it's knees.
If, big if... you only load as described above you will be ok.
However... first time you load wet sand or gravel or dirt or green wood you better be careful. Most people have trailers that match truck capabilities. That trailer deserves a 3/4 ton diesel. The Tacoma does best around a 3-4K limit. 5K is pushing it and it definitely does not like 6K.
This is the reason I now drive a Tundra.

Agree with hiPSI. That's way too much trailer for a Tacoma.

Understood, I appreciate the advice. I thought / hoped the trailer guy was giving me good advice. This was my fear. This is my first truck and trailer and thought I was making a good purchase. Damn it!

Trailer salesman are ruthless. They'll tell you any vehicle is good to tow whatever trailer they're trying to sell.

Oh it's a good trailer lol. Just not enough truck!
Do some research and put some lines on the inside of the trailer. The lines would be the highest level of dirt you can haul. Another line would be green oak. Another line would be sand and another gravel. Add water and that would halve the levels. You are probably going to find you can't put more than a few inches of gravel in there before you are overloaded!
If you are math challenged let me know. Give us your trailer inside dimensions, along with trailer weight and we can tell you how many inches, spread evenly, you can haul of these different materials.
    Good luck!

Thank you sir. I think I'm going back to the trailer sales guy. Last thing I want to do is damage the truck, it only has 858 miles on it.

Yea wise idea. If I had that trailer it would be too much temptation to load it up properly, which would be way too much for the poor little Tacoma.
Hell, it would be too much for my Tundra!

I have grown up with the thought of towing a trailer and your truck capacity is like having an electrical circuit. When you calculate your load its 80% of what max is, the same rule of thumb has been for me the same when towing a trailer with a truck. So you door jamb states 5600 x 80% = 4480 is what you should be aiming at. Don't necessarily do the same but it give you a safe buffer and helps protect the taco.

Thank you and the forum for all the advice. I was supper excited to bring this trailer home Friday night. It was when I took this photo across the street my mind started to race about it being too big. I will get something smaller and hopefully the trailer guy is good about working with me on something different.

Not be an ass, but Yeah, you could've done your homework before purchasing, but sales guy didn't have to be a shitbag either! My guess is; if they're shady enough to sell you that driving a little Tacoma (that's assuming they knew) they're probably not going to be very helpful after the sale,,, unless you're state has some sort of laws and that applies to trailers.
I agree with @hiPSI , that's 3/4,,,,, or probably even 1 ton territory. When it comes to towing? Chew brings a gun to a knife fight.

Go find a nice used 3/4 ton and use it to tug the trlr around, both good looking units you got.
