I routinely get 18 city and 24 hwy. I think the frustration comes from seeing other manufacturers releasing a new drivetrain every other year that's slightly better economically. There will probably be a 2022 model 4x4 that breaks the 30mpg hwy barrier. I for one am okay with my mileage, I only drive 5000 miles a year. But if Toyota mated the electric motor from the rav4 to the 3.5 I would absolutely consider it.

    This!

I love my truck but the MPG is laughably bad. It's not other way around it.

I must say that from the standpoint of an engineering concept, and aesthetically, RTTs are really cool. And no one likes to sleep on the ground when it’s rocky or wet or whatever. On the other hand, somehow I’ve gotten through countless backpacking trips with very few problems and rather enjoyed camping on the ground. The simplicity is wonderful.

Living in the mountains, cold snowy winters, having heavier tires, and 80 mph speed limits on the highway I get 14-16 mpg. I see everyone else getting far more than me, but my taco gets me where I need to go and has never let me down so I don’t care

Got a 2 inch lift on 33s no more weight than that and I’m only getting 12.7 mpg in the city and I drive it like a grama and have never used the Ect button since I got the truck back in November it’s pretty horrible even when it was stock I was 15 In the city at best and I rarely go past 2k, I wouldn’t care if gas wasn’t almost 4$ a gallon here in Cali it keeps goin up what a ripoff

That is really terrible mileage. My 4x4 4door f150 eco boost on 35s got 15 in the city.

It had the 4.3L, V6, 5 speed manual I drove 30 miles one way to work and got 17-19 m.p.g. Once took a interstate trip running the air the whole way and got like 22.8 m.p.g. and that included an hour in the parking lot eating, running the air to get out of the heat at Cedar Point park !

i know it’s rediculous this truck better go past 150k miles or else I wish I would have been better off getting an f150 5.0 with 400hp and 2mpg more lol fucken toyota, at least the truck will be worth way more by then so if you think about it the mpg you lose you get back in resale value anyhow so I guess it all works out unless you plan on making it a lifelong truck

Except rolling around in a first gen at this point is like rolling around in a 4th gen Civic, it dries lady parts out because they thing you're on fries at McDonald's and spike meth on your days off

Some of my better trips... I average 21-22 mpg normally in the summer and average 19-20 mpg in the winter.

My current tank is 13.x mpg. Most of my trips are only about 3 miles.

Short trips kill MPG. Not letting the engine get up to operating temp kills engines.

Combustion moisture doesn't have a chance to cook out of the engine.

90% of the wear that occurs in an engine occurs before it gets up to operating temperature. Operating temperature is a balance where the metal doesn't wear as much as well as the oil is very effective, but not hot enough to cause break down. These million miles Tacomas and Tundras get there because of how they're driven. It's also why you see emphasis on "highway miles" when someone is selling something with high miles. All that in addition to the moisture comment mentioned above.

Isn’t part of the attraction to “highway miles” the reduced wear and tear on the transmission from less shifting? Which is not to discard anything you said. I make a lot of short trips these days and I have to consciously warm the engine up some days or extend my drive because I get concerned about long-term impact on the motor.
