Right away, at least that’s what I experienced . I have the 2017 so it’s a huge difference from stock.

FWIW, this was a known thing in the FJ community. TC shudder. Eventually Toyota owned up to it and warranty repairs were authorized. For me, it was a specific rpm and load. Could happen in all gears. But I could make it happen at will. Eventually, my brain and right foot teamed up and just avoided those scenarios. Take it out of ‘D’ and it stopped immediately. But that was in the 4.0. Mine started at about 60k miles. I sold it at about 190k miles and it hadn’t changed one bit in that time.

I even downloaded a $0.99 app to monitor vibrations and it was the same frequency no matter the gear.

I've had a few toyota 4wd trucks, and a couple cars over my 50+ years driving time, plus drive numerous chevy, dodge, jeep, and ford trucks of the past. This 2020 taco i have now is as good or better than all of them. There just isn't any vibration i can detect.

Good for you. I didn’t detect anything for the first 4,000 miles which is why is was very happy.

So I gotta to know...did the tune help? Or is it still the same?

I don't have the tune. But I do notice exactly what what the video shows. Where the transmission is not tuned correctly and hunts gears in my 2021 OR auto.

The tune did not help me with my shudder but the truck stopped hunting for gears and the shifting was much smoother and better pedal response.. the tune will help you with what you’re describing

87, i was recommended to try 93 next. Ill try 93 after I see what another dealership decides to do with my truck for now

I can't understand what is the matter with toyota's current tune. Maybe my expectations of these trucks isn't the same as what others think they should be. If i wanted a truck with over 400 hp. i would of went elsewhere.

On stock older trucks the tune sucked, the auto transmission shifted constantly on small hills/head winds. It just got worse if you add bigger tires or weight to the truck. OVTune has reworked the base tune to fix a lot of those issues, more like an enhanced stock tune. Now that VFTUNE has been out tunes from @PapaRee, @Mooseditty17, @TWTaco, and others have taken it to another level. Aggressive/better throttle response, transmission holds gears better, and so on. Each truck is different as far as weight/tire size so the tune lets us adjust for our specific truck and driving situation. Can't speak for the new Tacoma models/stock tune but sounds like if you stay stock the newer tune is fine.

its still hunts gears a bit but overall, I was very happy with how the truck drove at first. I didn’t really experience all of the complaints about the transmission that everyone else had until lately..

Or maybe you aren't experiencing the same issue that OP or others are and repeatedly stating that your truck is fine and you have no problems isn't really contributing anything meaningful and helpful? Maybe other trucks don't run just like yours?

OP, you have moved past this with the OV tune, but my truck has a bad miss on 87 and I have to run 89 or 93 to get it nice and smooth. a tank of 87 will result in a miss bad enough that you'd swear it is a driveline vibe. I know you have landed on the Tranny being the culprit, but I'd only recommend keeping an open mind about what could be the issue. Good luck getting it sorted out.

thanks for the insight. Multiple people have recommended running the 93 tune to me and i am considering it after I get a response from another dealership atm.
