I am waiting for my new Tacoma to come in and reviewing some dealer options they made me aware of. The remote start seems like a must-have option. There is an installed option and the Toyota Connect option. Are they mutually exclusive? My salesman is leading me to believe that I need to have the install before I can use the App on my phone. This seems suspect...Any insight?

Look into N2 designs @N2DesignsInc. I put one in my truck and it's been working flawlessly. Install was easy and Jimmy can walk you through if you have issues.

I believe all 2021 models come with Toyota Connect. If so, you will already have remote start that can be used through the app or the key fob.

My 2021 TRD Sport has it already and it’s not listed anywhere as an installed option. Click the remote twice and hold on the 3rd click and starts up

Not true unless you have the Premium Audio and Navigation Package with Options. However, MANY times dealership salesmen have stated that the vehicle they're selling you has it and it doesn't, or don't know it has it and you discover it. We've seen both instances where it was and wasn't (Remote Connect) called out on the window sticker and the vehicle still had it. However, included by default, no.

I stand corrected. It is not standard on SR and SR5 trims. It is standard on TRD OR/Sport and above trims for 2021 models. The premium audio/navigation option is not required for those trims to have Remote Connect.

Correct. It would be a random add on at that point...which sometimes goes "unsaid" as some have experienced...even on the window sticker. I was just mentioning the fact that it was not standard by default on all the trims as you had mentioned. From lowest to highest trim, not all will have it...

While on the subject of remote start, I have never been able to get mine to work correctly on my '21 Off Road. Works perfectly w the key fob, but when I get in the truck the engine kills itself when I put it in gear. Sometimes I can't even start it again using the push button for a few minutes afterwards.

Am I supposed to be doing something different before attempting to drive off? I'm sure this is a safety thing (so someone couldn't just hop in and take off), but obviously I have the key fob on me when I hop in.

It’s my understanding that this is how it’s supposed to operate. That they all shut off when you unlock. Frustrating, but safety I guess.

Mine has remote start even though its not listed anywhere in the window sticker ETC. I tried it the other day and it started and then I opened the door and it turned off so I don't see the point of it

Remote Start sucks on a Toyota because of the fact they shut off when the door is open. They claim for safety reasons but other manufacturers continue to run once door is open. The doors can’t be open till unlocked anyway. In other brands, the vehicle can’t be moved out of park till door is unlocked and key fob inside vehicle. Toyota really f’d up remote start.

Yeah, whats the point if I open my door and it turns off then I have to restart it. My f150 would turn on then I would open door put foot on brake and push the start but to be able to unlock the shifter and go. That makes sense. NOT turning off the second I open the damn door

The function everyone here is missing is "takeover" Toyota didn't build in a takeover function which is asinine. When it's -50 here and the truck has only ran for 10 minutes I don't want it to turn back off. Just give us a damn takeover function.

Aaannnddd then the free trial runs out and your RS won't work unless you pay for the subscription or get an aftermarket.
That's when using the factory Connect system.
