Anything welding

Does Mobtown use 2-1/2" x 1/4" tube for both the crossbar and the hitch? The nice thing about that is I'd only need to buy a single stick of 2-1/2" tube to cover both pieces.

 

I’m not sure about the size of the main tube. I do know the hitch isn’t a normal piece of tube though. It’s a weld on hitch receiver.

 

Tables and carts lately. Just picked up some metal to make a toolbox welding cart.

Receiver tube does not have a weld seam on the inside. Its also $20/ft, and that was when I made my bumper 5+ years ago.

 

Yep, they use something like this. It’s what I used on my bumper as well.

Yup. Except i got mine at the local metal shop where I got the rest of the metal for my bumper. It was a normally stocked item and available in up to 20 feet. I used standard 2 1/2" tubing for the cross bar though, because it was cheaper.

Awesome, that's the exact one I was looking at as well. Good to know I'm on the right track! Do you all think 2-1/2" x 1/4" tube is strong enough for the cross piece that connects to the frame brackets?

 

I do, yes. Especially if you add in some gussets.

 

That's what I'm using on mine. Cut in half with the receiver in between. That said, both are also welded to the top plate of the bumper for additional structure. I have towed a 1 cubic yard cement trailer, which is at/above towing rating, with no problems. I also just welded straight to the frame plates, no through holes. All that said, I am not an engineer. Don't take my advice as gospel.

 

Thanks, that helps a lot. Good to have options with regard to how the pieces are connected, depending on how the geometry works out.

 

Here are some pictures of mine if it helps. I'd recommend powder coat, or a more durable paint like Monstaliner over the rattlecan rustoleum bed liner I used on this.

I’ll probably add a hitch behind the license late. I’m building the bumper to be low profile so it only protrudes past the tailgate about 2 inches. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for the receiver tube to be reinforced for towing. Good new is that I don’t tow anything but I use a hitch mounted spare tire carrier so it’ll be strong enough for that. I’ll have to rebuild the tire carrier as well to compensate for the higher location of the new receiver.
I’ll also admit here that I’m being a bitch about cutting my bedsides. Not that I’m not comfortable doing it- I’ve actually installed half a dozen high clearance bumpers on other peoples trucks. It’s just that I don’t want to cut MY bedsides. Haha. I’ll probably put my big boy pants on this week and do it. For now I’m only building out the center section of the bumper.
