brake light leak - silicone?

Anyone with the brake light leak diy fix with silicone? Did it work well? Mine is leaking and I do not want to pay $700 to fix it. Thanks

 

It works, use the clear stuff

 

I applied silicone on my years back. Like said above use clear type and mask off the area with tape to achieve a clean finish.

 

I have a topper on mine so cant see. Thinking about doing 5200 lol

This stuff is pretty thick and nasty to work with, its similar to the glass adhesive 3m makes, if you decide to use this, make sure to tape sections off so you don't make a mess.

 

that boat stuff will hold up the longest, 3M 4200 or 5200. If it will keep water from entering a boat under the water line, it'll surely keep a little bit of water out of your brake light.

My third brake light was over tightened on my double cab so the housing broke from the bolts holding it in place. I could literally wiggle the light and feel it move. Dealer quoted me $400 for labor and parts to replace the light.

Bought the light myself, pulled down the headliner, and installed the light and applied a bead of silicone beforehand. Cost about $150 total and maybe 4 hours of work since I didn’t know how to remove the headliner at first. It’s been holding up well for the past 3 years. The third brake light is different for the double cab and access cab Tacomas. Access cabs have screws outside and are easily assessable. Double cabs have to have the headliner removed to access the light from the interior.

Think it's worth all that work, or simply using a Geocel sealant from the outside?

 

Well guys I went with what I had in the garage already,

$32 3M 5200 (06500) Permanent Bonding and Sealing for Boats and RVs Above and Below the Waterline Waterproof Repair, White, 10 fl oz Cartridge

3M 5200. Its white, and ugly as hell but being that I have a camper top I dont really care too much. No leaks anymore....

 

Which one?

 

Is this still a problem on 2020's and 2021's?

Not that I know of. But then again I have a 2017 and have yet to have this issue.

 

I fixed mine with the new light assembly. About $130 for the part brand new, and a couple hours work.

 

You can order them in black - 4000UV would probably be best
