Good post TheMaster, me being from Detroit I say why the hell not. If the US can bail out the finance industry then why not the Big 3.

You've got a very good point there.

I agree with you there. but I do think it's rediculous that the tax tax payer is being penalized for corporations lack of responsible business practices
(including rediculous CEO wages) or just lack of being smart in business

    A few bolts are different.
If it helps our economy, sure, but deep down I want to say they need to dig themselves out. This is a little different than with the financial companys, automakers have the tools to help themselves right in front of their eyes, they just need to be innovative and smart about the direction they take.

I heard the tail end of a radio show where they mentioned that some auto workers make $85 an hour. Is that true?

The worker doesn't make $85 an hour. The $85 an hour would be the cost to the company including hourly wages, pensions, benefits, disability insurance etc.

I doubt any auto 'worker' makes $85/hour. Not to say a salaried big-wig doesn't make that much and more. That's a sure way to go out of business. However, I could see it cost the automaker $85/hour per worker after taxes, insurance, fringe benefits, 401K match, etc.

My own personal opinion is to get rid of the UAW. I would hate for a union to run my company. That's what the UAW does. I'm all about someone making a fair wage to support their family, but it shouldn't come at the expense of the entire company.

That's one thing that really pisses me off, last year GM had a terrible year and yet all the executives got their millions in bonuses. Detroit is in serious trouble and if the big three go down its not going to be good for the automotive industry at all.

How dare the Congress to waste the public's money to save any of these corporations. Even though, ink and paper is pretty cheap.

What ever happened to compete or die.

My answer. NO! Why we shouldn't. Because if you bail out the big three where does it stop? Where does the Govenrments involment in the "free market" stop. Bailing out the banks is one thing. I did not agree with it then and still don't. The market will correct itself in time, key word being time. We as greedy overzealous American consumers got ourselves into this mess. We have lived well beyond our means for some time now. Placing everything we could on credit. Buying houses we could not afford unless there was some creative financing. Just to get us into the house a little bigger than the Jones's. Inflation has gone up and the wage increases have not kept up with it. The governments intervention in this matter will teach us nothing. Americans are not ready for the gut check that is coming. We as Americans need to step back, stop living the high life that we can't afford, put money into savings and stop buying everything on credit. Credit is money you DO NOT HAVE.

I say don't help them, force bankruptcy, and all them out of union contracts. Then they will be able to recover.

I agree. I know too many people that are part of a union that say they are worthless. they take part of there salary and they don't see any benefit. It's also rediculous that they can't work without being in a union. I understand that Unions are (were) there to protect workers sallaries but I think it has spun out of control. I work for a global corporation and it doesn't have any unions and all is complete fine. so how are we doing it but other skilled labor can't?

+1 million. It didn't seem to help Chrysler in the 80s or they wouldn't be right back where they started today

Build a better product! I had the misfortune of driving a chevy hhr for a week. No wonder they are going under. Th gear shift console broke after two days and other interior parts fell off cause the just were glued or whatever they do to hold them. My dad had 2 suburbans when i was a kid. an 82 and 84. Both were good trucks. He had an 85 1 ton dually stake body with a 454 and sm 265 4 speed. They used it to haul vending machines, firewood, rocks. That truck was a tank, it was over built! I dont know what went wrong but the products now are junk. If we start saving them whos next? the Gov has too much control as it is.

+1 on the HHR. After two days in that car my neck was sore from trying to see out the windshield. That car was a horrible design.

Bailouts don't fix the problem. they just cover them up till it happens again.
