Does anyone know why some folks run a resi rear shock upside down, meaning the reservoir and shock are mounted with the reservoir on the bottom? Does this change anything other than looks? Thanks for any info. I've seen this a few times in the wild and also on here.

Special shock designed to be mounted that way?
Or just someone installing the shock upside down? (either intentionally or by mistake)

I've seen it mainly on Jeeps. Maybe fitment is the reason.
It doesn't change anything other than being prone to getting hit easier.

You mean like factory TRD Pro shocks?

If the resi is small, an inverted shock and piggyback reservoir can be less expensive to manufacture. The drawback is the the shock is more vulnerable to damage when rock crawling.

Yes that is what it looked like to me. Just curious is all if it does anything other than look different.

    None
You also have more unsprung weight mounting a shock that way.

If you're asking about piggyback vs remote resevoir...
I believe piggybacks have a higher flow rate and, due to where the reservoir connects, they compress fluid only and not nitrogen and fluid.

The mfr has a choice of different hose sizes they can use in the design of the shock.
The fluid going into the resi is simply the fluid displaced by the shock shaft as the shock is retracted, so the flow rate into the resi is more dependent on shaft diameter.
Fluid doesn't really compress. Both the piggyback and remote resi designs have the nitrogen in the resi with a dividing piston in the resi. Only real difference is packaging - once the resi gets beyond a certain size, there's usually no room to mount it as a piggyback.

And the reason for reservoirs? To provide more volume of oil so it does not get so hot. I'm surprised they have not put cooling fins on the res.... hey there's an idea! I'm sure if you made them out of aluminum you could sell them to all the mall crawlers lol.
