I have had both... Both great trucks. And when they finally decide to design a 3rd gen, I will get one of those.. Then a 4th gen and so on......

I like the first gens because of the size. If Toyota goes back to the smaller size trucks I'd happily buy one with more modern electronic/engineering etc...

I've always been in love with the 1st gen styling and sort of against the 2nd gens but lately they're starting to grow on me. for some reason the lower valence and fenders look really good to me. As for functionality I could definitely use some more room in the cab and a 4.0 wouldn't hurt but I still love my 01

1st-gen-naturally! I really feel that Toyota had better get back to building trucks the way they did ours. The 2nd-gens LOOK fantastic, have more than enough power, but due to Toyota not being able to keep up with demand while maintaining the stellar quality of the 1st-gens, our newer truck owning brothers and sisters are getting rooked! I feel sad about that-it's a shame. I remember in 2001 when mine was new, these trucks were far and few between. You would only see a handfull of them in a month! My theory is it was the 1st gens that really gained Toyota the reputation that caused a huge uptake in 2nd gen sales, and a mix between huge demand diluting quality control, and Toyota having trouble maintaining their amazing work ethic witin the American workforce is what is behind all these little problems with the 2nd gen trucks. I am hanging on to my black beauty at least until 2015 when I am sure they will have a sexy v8 Tacoma just for me:D

I agree. Gotta be my reasoning to. I dont off road with my 1st gen but i know plenty of people that do. They just go everywhere. And do what ever you want. Hell, my friend has a ghetto ass 88 single cab 4x4 pretaco. That thing has seen so much action the key is worn down to the point where it falls out while driving! But it has done some stuff i didnt know that dinky little truck could do. It is truly indestructible.

Plus the 1st gens look sweet! The 2nd gens look like "normal" trucks. There is just somthing awesome about a true 4x4 "mini truck" jacked up on some pretty big tires. They look sick. Ex-cabs being my personal favorite on lifted 1st gens.

X3. You 2nd gen owners crack me up with how great your electrical plug-ins are or the wonderful new access cab doors. All of the things that make a 2nd gen better are just frilly car type upgrades. I like my TRUCK. Solid and rugged the way its supposed to be

Loved both my tacoma's. The second gen is definitely mroe comfortable, but theres something I miss about creeping down atv trails in my truck. I'm thinking the access cab guys (like me) would have loved an updated mini truck same size but with newer engine and the access doors on the old sizing. maybe im alone here though.

Naw, you are not alone in thinking that. I'd love to have the 4.0 v6 and access doors on my '02 xtracab. That would be the best of both worlds.
