I'd max out a Roth account first then your traditional IRA if you want a "safe" investment with 8-12% gains. Throwing money at SPY will provide very little tax benefits (e.g., capital gains).

Even more frustrating, We'd all put in the max the IRS would allow, then about in the second quarter of the next year we'd get a big fat check in the mail. It was the return from the plan of part our own last year's maximum contribution. Seems the laws allow a maximum contribution by all employees, but only up to a point, subject to a fuck you. There is a formula by which the contributions of the "highly compensated employees" (IRS term) is weighed against the contributions of the "lower compensated employees". If there is a contribution disparagement of a certain "inequity" between the two populations of employees, then the benefit from the plan to the higher compensated employees is reduced by a formula that factors in the magnitude of participation of the lower compensated employees. In other words, if the illegals that work in the manufacturing portion of the company don't contribute enough, then those of us in sales who break our necks to make sales quota and thereby keep them motherfuckers employed, WE DON'T GET TO SAVE THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT! And their contributions controlled how much we could save. Fuck. YOU.

It's the same where you work. Go ask.

20210213_115022.jpg Great Thread. "Poor guy" here. Drive Box truck and Forklift.
First, antenna. Have 12 year old TV antenna bought for $50 5 years ago. 30+ channels better signal than cable because it is not compressed (high - def.)

Recently joined Toyota family, bought a 2006 Toyota Highlander 4WD with 150k, base model with sunroof and remote start. Clean vehicle treated well by dealer during sale.

    Due to past mistakes : terms 20% interest - 4 year loan with $1500 down @ $200 a month. Original price $6000.
I used sell cars for 7 years and was a wholesaler for a year. 1st. Generation Highlanders have reputation for going 350,000 miles with few problems. I had previous to this bought 2 vehicles for $1000 each that lasted 3 years total. A friend convinced me to get a loan to build credit and get a better vehicle.
Never married no kids, but don't make alot of $$$, so I have learned to be frugal, pay cash for everything, don't buy unless I need it, only buy name brands for necessities like steel toe (Wolverine) boots that last.

I did join work 401k last year, and have a more steady job than in sales, with a future. Also have strict budget with $300 a month going to emergency savings.

I am 53, if I had done this at 33, with frugal habits and a Toyota instead of an Audi and keeping up with Joneses I probably would have a half paid ranch house by now.
I will say the people on here who pay down loans early with little to no debt other than mortgage the common theme seems to be frugal habits driving Toyotas that last instead of BMW (bring my wallet) and living below means. It is a little dull, but I will take dull vs. Stress chasing payments when life events happen like job loss etc.

I have always wanted a Tacoma, but prices in the Northeast are insane, and I got a good deal on my Highlander.

Financed 66 months at 3.14%, will have it paid off in 61 months with my budgeted payment...

I used to think folks were crazy for financing up to 84 months, personally, I don't like going over 60, but now, I'm not so sure, with everything that is going on.

My last truck I bought new was a 2003 Ford Ranger 4.0 MT 4x4 access cab, I paid it off in 60 months and drove it for another 3 years...

My personal belief is to buy new, pay off in 5 years, drive another 3 - 5, and trade in on another new one.

I second the opinion that taking $40,000 - $50,000 out of the bank to pay in cash for new might be a poor decision...

I was told once by a car salesman that you always want to have a payment/loan. I thought this was not a great policy, I now believe otherwise...

I just hope to God that Toyota still offers a manual transmission in 8 - 10 years, provided I will be around, when I buy another new truck...

Regardless of the term that you must finance to purchase it, you buy Toyota so that you only have to obtain an auto loan 2-3 times in a lifetime, if you so desire. The last Toyota I financed was in '93. I'm still driving it. Buy smart. Finance seldom.

Don't forget that HSAs are now part of your overall personal retirement plan.

If your company offers an HSA plan jump on it. If your company doesn't offer a pretax HSA option, open one at your own bank/credit union.

HSAs are tax protected on several levels and investible. This is your money for any medical needs in the future. I just wish we could contribute more than the yearly max of $7100 (or whatever it is this year).

I did a 39 mo. lease at 10k miles/year. I like to keep my options open, because I get bored with cars after several years.

That said, I'm so in love with this truck, I may end up keeping it when the lease is up. It's not perfect, but my gripes are extremely minor in the whole scheme of things.

I also want to mod the fuck out of it. I haven't had that feeling in a long time. Not since my 2000 Toyota Celica.

That's pretty good, I might have gone 36, probably not 48, however.

I was cash poor when I bought my 2021, but I did have equity in my trade, that's the beauty of these trucks, they retain their value. When I bought my 2015 (used) a few years ago, I seem to recall the V6's, particularly the OR's going for upwards of $44,000. I don't know if this was a local issue or what.

I got a great deal on mine because someone at the dealership bought the truck fully loaded OR, premium pkg and all(LED hlps,LEDfogs, leather, 360 cam, dealer tint). They could not afford the monthly payment, so they had to trade it back in. Truck barely had any miles on it, not even a speck of mud underneath. He ate up the only real loss in value on the truck on my behalf. I did have to drive a few states out to get the deal. All of my local inventory with similar options was in the high price range if not more, with not a single deal in sight. They scoffed at me when I asked if there was some way to include leather upgrades in the deal. They are acting like there is no profit in these trucks.

My truck was originally my dad's and he gave it to me; Sticker price was over $17K. He got $2,300 for the 1996 Nissan Pathfinder he traded, and in the end paid just under $15K for the truck; I believe he put like $2,000 down and financed the rest. The truck was financed not through Toyota, but through Citadel, at just 0.9% APR; I forget how long the loan was for, but by the truck was paid off early, before March 2013.
