Hello, Tacoma World! I need some advice and tips.. I have a 2008 Tacoma 2.7 liter, 5 lug.. I want to know the size of my 3rd member and ratio, it’s stock at the moment.. I’m in the process of purchasing a 8.4, 410 ratio, would this fit directly in?

    @whatstcp

I believe the 4.10 trucks are 6 lug?

    I don’t think the 5 lug trucks with a 2.7 came with 4.10?

Hi, I was told it’s around 350 ratio, I want to make sure that my ratio is not a 410 because I’m trying to upgrade it and also make sure that it will fit directly in with no modifications..

Your truck should not be 4.10.
But the axle code on the door sticker will tell you for sure.

In the picture below it will be a 4-digit code.
    Like the one circled

Would that 6 lug, 4.10 3rd member fit directly in or would I have to make some modifications? That’s exactly what I’m purchasing, it’s from a 2003 Tacoma 4x4..

That’s the same way I read it.
It should, but I have no idea if the axle splines are the same.
Like you said, it might not be “simple”?

I don’t really know. I’ll tag a few of the guys and see what they say?

Yes - 8.4 diff has same bolt pattern for the housing / diff. However the pinion flanges have different bolt patterns from 1st to 2nd gen Tacomas so pinion flange will have to be redrilled to match the driveshaft (60mm vs 66mm).

I wonder if the slip yoke has the same length and spline count from 1st to 2nd gens. If it does you could just swap the slip yoke.

EDIT: Nevermind. Slip yokes on the carrier bearing side. On 4Runner's it's on the pinion side. lol

Could I just remove the pinion flange from my existing and bolt it on to the new one?

I don't have a slip yoke on my 2nd gen - is that were it's on the carrier bearing side because 1st gens have it on the pinion side so you could possibly do that if 2nd gens are same.

I don't see why not if you can properly set the pinion flange with torquing it to spec.

    A thing or two...
As @Dalandser said, 1st and 2nd gen aren't exactly the same. I think they reinforced the internals of the diff as well.

Prerunners and 5-lugs don't have a slip joint in the driveshaft like the 4x4 trucks. The slip joint functionality is handled at the driveshaft to transmission connection. On the 4x4s, the driveshaft bolts to the transfer case amd rear diff, so it has to have a slip joint somewhere in it. The 5-lug/prerunner driveshaft slips onto a splined shaft in the transmission, so that and the flex in the carrier bearing takes care of the needed movement.

They are a direct swap minus the flange - as to internals changing IDK - I go to Erik for most of my info:

    http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

I'd just redrill the flange since it would make it work with only 4 easy to drill holes.

Bro I don't think so, in fact I know so because I have a first and second gen and wanted to use a 2nd gen diff on my 1st gen. The first gen Taco, Sequoia, Tundra, and T100 all use a smaller 60mm bolt pattern on the pinion flange and the 2nd gen Tacos have a 66mm bolt pattern on the pinion flange.

The third is not the same in the literal meaning if it needs a new flange or to be drilled - you can swap 2nd gen to 2nd gen and 1st to 1st but your friend obviously missed this.

Thanks for all the Good information, from what I’m reading it’ll bolt right in, I’ll cross my finger and hope I don’t need to do any modifications
