It doesn't. I've tried that trickery before (With NOK actually) Had 100 shares, sold 50 when it went up and made $15, it then tanked lol

bought $6 calls...
up 10%, but there's like 0 volume...taking forever to climb out of this dip...

Anyone care to share how they did in 2020? This is fresh on my mind as I have been wrapping up my taxes this week.

My company sponsored 401K was up right at 18% (so it tracked right with the S&P 500) This upsets me every year as my non retirement investments 9/10 times just crush the limited investment options we get in our 401Ks.

My non retirement brokerage account was up 67.78% in 2020. 9.81% YTD

My spouse and I both have vested pensions that will pay approx 50% of the average of our highest 5 year salary. (Pension 100% funded, held by employee association and not the company we work for). I share this part as I likely have a higher risk tolerance in my 401K and trading account with a solid pension to fall back on.

 

I could be +$522 in my Roth on GME alone instead of -$1400 if I weren't such a moron when they stopped buying and only selling power on it. Should've gotten out the second they did that. (But it was going oh so good at the moment)

We've just gotten used to seeing stocks gain and lose 300% a day lol

 

So the long call option price is determined by time and stock price.
For your average $4 stock a 1 year $5 call might be $1.25. So you're looking at a break even of $6.25 a share in 1 year. If the calls are in high demand the price might be $1.50. Just because the calls are there to buy doesn't mean they are worth buying...I would look at the price now for a 1 year $NOK $5 is $0.60 and the 2 year, Jan 2023 $5 is $1.00. That's not a bad price if it's going to get there, However $NOK has never been over $5 except for this little bump it just had...So there may be more value in 25 shares at $4 rather than 1 call @$100 for $5. That 1 call @$100 means the shares have to go to $6.00 to break even. If you bought 25 shares at $4 and it went to $6 you're looking at $50 profit. To make $50 PROFIT on the long call the shares have to go to $6.50 for your $100 $5 call. But if the shares are $6.50 your 25 shares are now a profit of $62.50. So we re-adjust and find that the ACTUAL profit price point for your Calls vs shares total profit made on an investment of $100 is $6.65.

SO next step.
You buy 100 shares now for $4 a share, SELL that long Call for $100 and you're guaranteed a return of $100 on $400,
You see it gets very complicated when buying reach calls that are in demand
