New Pioneer DMH-WC6600NEX flush mount install

Was wondering if anyone has had the following issues with this headunit:

1. Random glitch/malfunction where reverse camera is not working. Have to shut off entire truck to reset the headunit and then works fine. Happens about 1-2 times per month.

2. When using carplay, I’ll click to go to the app menu or split screen menu in bottom left hand corner and Siri comes up instead. Idk if that’s a carplay issue or headunit issue or phone issue. Happens when headunit may crash/or is running slow.

3. Similar to #1 but random times steering wheel controls don’t work and I have to turn off the truck to reset the headunit again. Prob happens 1 time per month.

4. Slow response in general when click different buttons. Can be on main menu, carplay or wherever. Other times it’s super responsive, but sometimes takes way to long to load the next item. Maybe I have too high of expectations for how it should work...

I’ve had it since last October and for the most part love the headunit, but the freezes frustrate me. Super annoying if it happens mid drive on the interstate. Also anyone know if there’s a way to reset the headunit without completely turning off the truck if it freezes or crashes??

 

What functionality do you lose by installing the new head unit? When you have GPS directions put in on Android Auto do they show up on the center display in the dash? Do you still have song title on the center display?

Right now I'm looking at the 7600 pioneer with a maestro and I'm just curious as to what I'm going to lose if I switch from a stock to an aftermarket head unit.

 

You will lose the compass heading in the center display.

You will retain the song information.

The new headunit will retain all the factory settings as long as you purchase the maestro unit.

 

Has anyone gotten the maestro programming for cameras to work? I tried to set it to hold down the down button for rear view and up button for front view but it won’t work

 

So if I have directions put in on android auto, will the turns pop up like they did with the old gps directions? Also had remote start installed from the dealership when I bought the truck, will that be affected by the maestro?

Sorry, tried looking for all this info on youtube and others, but couldn't find any other information.

Okay guys and gals, I am experiencing a bug and wanted to see if anybody else is. Maestro claims it's a Pioneer bug. Here is my video of the bug and Maestro's response. Do I have a bad pioneer unit? I'm still under warranty.

My Note to Maestro:

I installed a DMH-WC6600 FW 1.3 in my 2017 Tacoma with JBL. I have the older version of the maestro RR (and maybe the older TOYO2 harness; I don’t have the OBDII wire connected, but still have all the vehicle features and gauges working. I followed the 2017 wiring diagram) flashed with 3.2 firmware. I also have a power jumper from my previous W4500NEX install so the pioneer is directly powered from the vehicle.

When I start my car I connect to CarPlay immediately and the cluster does not populate with song information. In order to get it to populate I need to go into iPod and back to apple CarPlay. If I go directly to HD radio/tuner and back to CarPlay, it will only populate two of the three fields in the cluster. Going to other sources besides radio seem to have the same effect as iPod. I am also not able to select a source from the steering wheel controls as shown in the video. I am using the default Maestro presets for the steering wheel controls.​

I later on found that hitting the Siri/voice button populates the info after Siri clears.

The short answer is that we found a bug in the radio firmware. When this issue happens, the RR receives some meta data, but it’s missing the source. Because the information is incomplete, we send the last known source. We have reported the bug to Pioneer, in hopes that they can resolve it with a firmware update.​

Thanks TiredHands for the video, that helps me out a lot actually. Do the turns show up on the dash display like with the etune navigation, or do I lose that? How about the dealership installed remote start?

I mean, not going to change my mind about upgrading, just want to go in to it with eyes wide open.

I'm thinking the pioneer DMH-WT8600NEX, maestro RR, and an OEM audio+ reference system with the amp. Probably not all at once, but over a year. Anybody see any problems with this setup?

 

@Dazed you will lose factory turn indication. That screen is blank. No clue about remote start.

 

I wouldn't do OEM audio with an aftermarket head unit. It's built and tuned specifically for the etune. If you upgrade to pioneer you've done the lions share of the work. Adding amp(s) and sub(s) is straightforward and you have options if you don't want to build a sub box yourself. Replacing the door speakers is straightforward and only involves potential construction of template(s) or purchase. The amp rack is perhaps the key piece if you want under-seat mounting but many mount the amp on the rear wall.

 

Yeah, my main reasoning on the OEM audio was the seamless integration and near plug and play ability of it all. Especially the box for the sub behind the drivers side bench seat. I don't want to just have some terrible looking felt covered box back there that isn't fitted to the exact space.

 

The seamless integration is exactly why I went the direction of the OEM Audio Plus Reference with dedicated sub amp. Everything is already custom tuned to the vehicle. All cables are already built to length. Even the sub looks factory. My days of building custom boxes and crawling around upside down in my vehicles are over. The WC6600 and OEM Audio Plus Reference combo sounds amazing. The only thing I have left is to install are the Sound Skins in the inner and outer doors and I'm finished with the audio upgrade.

 

Just received my refurbished unit from Drive-In Autosound. $700 and it looks brand new... packaged like it was brand new too. Still waiting on a few odds and ends for install but looks good so far.

There are options subwoofer wise beyond OEM audio including JL Audio stealthbox, custom fabrication, etc. Agreed, though, that the drop in of the subs is a nice appeal and the amp rack mounting all squared away is quite nice too. Drilling a large hole in the rear seat cubbies, though, was definitely not for me (though not too hard to de-pin/re-pin using a smaller hole just for the cable) and for $2k it's a lot to spend for what you actually get. I dropped about 2500 on amps, speakers and sub box and I feel like I got a lot more value. I think anyone wanting decent performance should give up on those plastic pockets and use up as much space as you possibly can back there.

With their amps being tied to the harness, you just don't have options down the road.

When I broke it all down (and I actually did this in a message to them which was never responded to) I realized the primary reason I liked the system was the wiring harness simplifying so much.

I've since over-indulged in 090II unsealed pins and connectors (it's like I have the whole set) and gained crimping skills to the point where I created my own T harness to inject amplified speaker out through the factory speaker wiring from an 18 gauge 9 pin cable to my amp mounting location under the seat (9th pin is for remote turn on).

Of course my truck is still running off Pioneer head unit and OEM speakers for various reasons despite my having pre-fabricated some of this stuff and paid for just about everything including some dynamat which sits in a box laughing at me. I hope to get some progress done when we escape from this brutal so cal winter we're having (yes, I'm joking, but time has been a little bit on the low side lately due to parenting.)

 

Crutchfield has some used units for $680 on eBay... description says they don't have any scratches on the screen, were returned within crutchfield 60 day window, and have all accessories included. Might be a good deal.

This is my first post, and I decided to do it here in order to thank all the people in this thread who have contributed with info regarding this headunit.
This is my second Tacoma - is a 2016 double cab TRD Sport - my first Tacoma is a TRD SR5 Access Cab from 2007.

Long story short, I did not like the OEM system on my Taco, so I searched and was decided to get the Alpine Halo 9, until I saw this post, and also read all the bad reviews on the Alpine.
I went straight to Crutchfield, and they helped me get everything I needed. Then downloaded all the info and installation guide, gave it to my local technician and he did the magic.
Btw I´m writing from South America.

 

Install turned out pretty good. Gotta go back during daylight and route microphone and GPS. Think I have a wrong cable for factory USB integration too. Not sure what I need rca female to 3.5mm male cable for yet.



This is how I put the brackets on. I should probably get a third screw somewhere but we will see how it ends up. Some velcro on bottom touch screen to stop vibration.



Lots of wires. Took me a good hour to actually understand how everything worked together. I've never installed with the Maestro thingy before. I just used butt connectors for joining wires.



It was getting late and I didn't want to miss dinner so no pictures of actually installing. Pretty straightforward though.



This is how it looked without messing with fitment at all. Pretty decent.

 

I just installed the JVC KW-Z1000W w/maestro rr2. My backup camera picture quality is terible compared to stock, did you find a fix? Also, my android auto would not work either. Kept telling me to set the parking brake. I ended up disconnecting the parking brake wire and grounding it. Now AA works fine.

 

The quality sucks because the screen is so much bigger, and the camera sucks.
