Could you help a friend of mine diagnose a issue with the motor in his Drag race car

He's had this problem for many years now and still can't figure out what's causing it . He's even properly shimmed the starter and that didn't work

There is a 153 and 168 tooth flex plate I think. might start there.

EDIT; 12.5/1 on the street is tough. AV gas or 110 Oct.....lol

 

He's got the correct flexplate which is a 168 tooth

 

Oh well. I'm going to guess it's a timing issue. He said 9 versions of the same engine? Who's degree'g the cam because it's a periodic backfire right?

Yes it's been freshened 9 times over the last 10 years and was built by a well known race engine shop in Las Vegas that builds engines for PSCA

I thought about the same thing about cam timing or the wrong cam causing excessive cyl pressure . He is running locked out timing and it sometimes struggles to turn over , cranks over slowly

 

So he has it locked full advance?
How much does it retard? Or should I say how much is it supposed to retard? Did he confirm the retard timing while trying to start it with the spark plugs out of it and the timing light checking the timing. If he has that thing around 38° total he’s retard should be down around 10 to 12. He’s got too much advance while it’s spinning over

 

I ran 12.5 on the street. No issues

 

One more thing if they thing kicks back while he’s turning it over with the ignition off he’s got way too much cylinder pressure

That's what I'm thinking , he has a huge solid roller cam in that motor . A few years ago the engine sneezed on the starting line and shut off wouldn't restart . Damage was the timing chain sprocket bolts shearing off the cam

Yeah he’s got way too much cylinder pressure. Time for him to buy a new cam. And make sure he’s retarding with that ignition system. I would have him do research with a different profile cam in a different lobe center
