Ok so I installed a front harrop e locker and 4.88 gears. After final install upon rotating the front wheel I have a chatter coming from the clamshell. All my preload and backlash is within spec. My wear pattern is prefect! But in 2wd it chatters horribly! Does not do it in 4HI. Any goo roos out there ever run into anything like that? I have attached a couple pics of my pattern and a video of the problem I'm having.0D86B790-DCC1-40A0-A6CD-6B468509B347.jpgD4999CB7-16EB-4EF0-8565-793718F8AF01.jpg https://youtu.be/Put6NGfRKUI https://youtu.be/NUb4dx3MsRU

How sure are you it's not your ECGS bushing? What kind of sound do you mean by chatter? Rumbling? Squeaking?

if you rotate either both front wheels by hand or by turn front DS is the sound still present? Edit: or just lock it. To see if sound could be coming from spiders vs ring & pinion.

No ecgs bushing in the carrier. Has needle bearings. Ecgs doesn't have a bushing for the harrop. I've been talking to them but they haven't helped much. They actually told be to remove the needle bearing and run it without it!o_O It's a thumping click sound
It's only present when driver's side is spun. When locked it goes away and in 4wd it goes away. I'm beginning to think it's the spider gears. But everything looks good internally.

Yo, that's weird, but if they said so... I dunno fren. I think you're in a pretty small minority of people with front e-lockers and it's uncharted territory for my brain if they told you to run without the bearing.

Without a bearing, what keeps it oriented in the carrier? I'm pretty stumped on this unless you have some shiny metal chunks somewhere in your diff, but then why would it go away in 4wd?:notsure:

I've had it apart 3 times! No evidence of chunks or grindings of any kind. I told ecgs the same things. How is the cv suppose to be supported in the carrier!

Did you put gear oil in it? or is this the initial spin to make sure it works?

Is there room for the bearing, or does it obviously not fit?

Was this a complete unit from ECGS?

After re-watching the video, it definitely seems like the clicking sound is in sync with your spider gears or ring and pinion and not a bearing.

I'm sure this has a solution that will seem obvious later, but I'm trying to summon people with more knowledge on the issue by commenting. I love a good mystery.

Did you clearance the pinion? Did you grind away the clam housing in the specified locations?

Also, what size pinion shim did you use, what's your pinion pre load and what your carrier or total preload?

I used a total of .070 on the pinion with a 6 ipf preload on the pinion. The carrier is 7 ipf. I ground out the housing for the tab on the carrier. I didn't grind anything for the pinion as it seems to clear everything.

Yes everything was bought from Ecgs. The ecgs bushing was much bigger than the carrier sleeve itself

0.070 looks slight shallow, 072 to 073 would look better.

So 13"#'s of total preload? 6 on the pinion is low unless you are reusing oem bearings. New bearings need more preload.

Did you use crush sleeve or solid?

When you're spinning the CV, is the diff engaged in 4wd or still in 2wd?

Is it locked when you spin?

New bearings all the way around with a crush sleeve. I ended up using the original crush leave as I forgot to put the new one in on final assembly. So by my wear pattern you think I should go deeper? When spinning the axle I'm in 2wd.

I'd agree. If it doesn't make the noise when spiders aren't turning but does when they are. Are there C-clips or sort of retainers on the spiders in this diff?

It does it wether the ring and pinion are spinning or not. It's constant

Yeah, 072 or 073 may be better. The old crush sleeve is trash, throw it away. Old crush won't be thick enough as your original pinion shim is prob between 074 and 076. You need about 12"#'s preload on the pinion and about 20"#'s total giving the carrier 8"#'s. Your noise is unique, I can't pin point it.

    1. Did you drive the stub shaft in all the way?

    2. Did you reinsert the stub shaft oil slinger and is it all the way in?

    3. What size carrier shims did you use for the bowl and the lid?
