The Lexus gx uses a electric motor to lock the tcase into true 4wd from awd. Looks like the fj uses the shifter to do it mechanically

It looks like if you could twin stick the drivers side shift lever would be AWD/4WD shift modes and the passenger side shift lever would control the hi/neutral/lo shift rail.

For the awd fj tcase, I don’t see the need to actually twin stick it unless u just want twin sticks.

you would not be able to get an AWD low gear, so like many people would twin stick to get a 2LO, the AWD case could be AWD LO. If you keep the ADD actuator on the front and put in an AWD case, it would allow the same thing, if you engaged LO gear in 4WD and kept the ADD disconnected.

    My shit is all stock.
My goal would be to have one stick move me between hi and low. The other stick would be center diff lock or unlock. The single stick won’t do low gear open diff.

    So:

Normal driving would be hi gear, center diff open.

Backing in a trailer would be low gear, center diff open.

Off road would be hi or low with the option to lock or unlock center diff when I need it.

Drifting would be high gear, center diff locked, ADD disconnected. = RWD. ;)

if you keep the ADD you can do all of that without needing to twin stick

You’re right. LL with the front diff unlocked for trailer maneuvers.

I mean it’s really a matter of personal preference and what skills you have to install, how much money you want to spend, and how you want your vehicle to function.

If it were me, I’d probably go the twin stick route so I could avoid any electronics in the drivetrain system, which ultimately this mod (swapping in an FJ case) is about. If you’re ADD isn’t working, then it would be a higher priority, otherwise install the stock shifter and keep ADD locked most of the time. I wonder what we call this shift pattern. Certainly not a J, more like a “Z” shift pattern.

And once I think about it a bit, I would definitely get rid of the ADD for you. Since failure to engage the ADD would result in not being able to move, otherwise you’d be stuck driving home in 4wd, not AWD.

And what would you recommend now having had it both configurations?

I'm still researching what to do with the ADD vs FJ Tube (or secure locked?)

I would leave it there and locked unless you want to sell your setup for some extra cash. I replaced my stock ADD due to the axle tube shattering during a weekend adventure.

I just recently did an FJ transfer case swap in my 09 tacoma. I have everything done and I can hear the front diff actuator engaging. But my indicator light on my switch doesn’t turn on. I followed the Rock Solid wiring diagram that says to use the purple ignition (A5) and the light green/black (B26) to power the light on the switch. I can’t get the light to come on at all. Has anyone encountered this issue? Is there a different ground wire or positive wire I should be using from the 4x4 ecu harness?

I assume you got a switch from RST? Not sure on the terminals on that side but B26 is right from the ECU. So you either wired it wrong or something is up with the switch

If I touch the test light to the light green/black wire (b26) while everything is hooked up to the switch, the light comes on.

I think those switches were hit or miss. Mine worked at first now it just stays lit up. I can hear it click on and off so I know it still works.

Any one have good pictures of your single stick FJ t case shifter on a 5 speed ? Want to see what mods have to be done for clearance , preferably with the boots off center console on . Thanks .

I have all the parts for the add delete plus the FJ case with stock shifter , will probably pull the trigger this weekend . Hoping to get away with a little heating and bending of the t case shifter , would like to avoid cutting and welding as the first option would be more sanitary.

I’ve read all 70 plus pages of this thread but did not see any good reveal pics of the mods done to the single t case shifter on a 5 speed . I’m sure I can figure it out but this thread has been amazing , thanks to all of you that have figured out all the hard parts for the rest of use coming late to the party .
