Got my first truck, 2018 Tacoma Sport a little over a year ago. November 17th 2020, I take it in for the recall work (fuel pump). 5 days later check engine light comes on. Take it in again and the cause is the Evap canister hose. That gets taken care of. Now here we are on 2/15/21 and the check engine light comes on again. Service advisor tells me yesterday they have no idea the cause but do see a misfire in cylinder 1. Today I get another call and they have approval for an engine tear down that will happen Friday. No truck for me for at least two weeks and only one technician will be working on it so it’s based on his schedule.

So here I am pretty unhappy about this. I got a newer truck with 14,000 miles on it to avoid having issues for at least 4-5 years. I went through a recall with my Lexus IS, with a failed piston misfire. It was always an issue even after all the work was completed. Lexus would only cover so many engine flushes and then it was out of pocket to me.
I can’t imagine going through that again with a newer vehicle.

I tweeted out my disappointment and Toyota asked me to speak with them via brand engagement team. I did and expressed how bummed I am about all this. They asked what I would like from Toyota and I basically said a truck that works. Get me out of this mess. So now they are escalating my case to someone else.

Hopefully they can get me out of this agreement. Something.

    Stay tuned...

I just looked it up and apparently this sequence of issues can happen when a fuel pump goes bad or after it has been replaced. Since toyota replaced the fuel pump under warranty, they may be responsible for the other issues you are having. Hopefully they can fix this problem or replace the whole truck so you wouldn't have to worry about it. I still need to get my fuel pump replaced.

OP, I'm sorry to hear about this and I'm sure it'll get resolved. The best advice I can give is park your truck and don't drive it. I've done this since early last year and haven't had an issue since.

Cylinder 1 miss isn't a good sign. Gonna have low compression and an issue with a valve or valve seat I bet. Sucks but you're likely looking at a new head on that side.

There is NO WAY the OP is getting a new truck out of this, she has a 2018. It's not like she has a 1 month old truck that's having problems.

Hopefully they get her straight with minimal BS. I smell a new engine on Toyota's dime in his future.

Yeah but by that logic Toyota would be giving everyone new trucks when they rust out instead of replacing their frames like they have been for the last 20+ years.

Replacing a frame is ALOT more work than an engine and Toyota does it all the time.

I'm kinda shocked they're tearing it down so fast.

    She not he.

But yeah, I doubt I get a new truck out of this. That’s not what I expect but maybe they can take more of my money and get me in a newer truck with some sort of “shut up and go away” package.

The issue was approved by Toyota to tear it down and it will be taken care of under the manufacture 3yr/36k warranty.

My issue is down the road. I feel like it will be other things that come up. & they will say it’s not related to new warranty parts. Thus, me out of pocket.

I’m glad they are. He said they had no idea and submitted a claim to Toyota right away. Toyota approved. Maybe he told them I have a case open with Toyota Engagement.:confused::mad:

My bad - Pronouns corrected in my previous post.

Maybe push for an extended warranty (in writing) on the new engine/whatever repair work they do? I vaguely remember someone doing something similar years ago.

I feel like buying a “shut up and go away” package on a new truck is toyota getting more of your money for an issue on their part versus a new engine would be you getting brand new stuff on their dime.

Sucks to have to get a new engine but I wouldn’t be too worried about gremlins down the line. Engine swaps are pretty standard work for an experienced mechanic and all the work is concentrated to a single system (unlike a frame swap where everything gets touched).

It sucks. Unfortunately you're at the mercy of the dealership for now. Best of luck to you.

It’s all good. Thank you for all the comforting information. I fell in love with my truck so it’s a bummer.

I don’t even know what I would do. From the other link, it sounds like some 2019’s are now showing up with this problem. Not sure if it’s related to engine size, fuel pump recall, or faulty valves.

Thanks for chiming in. This forum is always so helpful.

    :stirthepot:Toyota reliability!

Ever wonder why the force the extra $199-699 on top of their new vehicles for complementary service? It’s to pay for all their recall, service bulletins etc. Two oil changes and one tire rotation doesn’t cost that much, but they need additional cash to cover non allocated time and documentation for each service case.
