Two weeks after I bought my Tacoma I found a large bubble in the paint on the roof. Toyota was hesitant but agreed to fix it for me at no charge. Well, I was washing my truck last Friday and noticed little black dots and the outer edge of these dots were orange, which I figured was rust, speckled all over my hood and roof. I decided to take it in and have Toyota look at it and see if this issue was covered under the warranty. Sure enough, the Toyota dealer I dealt with called me back and told me that they would take care of it and my truck will be repainted. I just wanted to share this with TW and see if anyone else out there has had the same issue with their paint and what they did to resolve it?

Damn. Doesn't suprise me with the cheap ass paint Toyota uses. But still, two weeks old, having rusting problems? Hopefully this will be a one time fix for you and you dont have any more problems with it!

    Good Luck!

My truck has the same problem. They washed it for me and never got it off, maybe I need to look into having it repainted!

    None yet! It's new!
Toyota doesn't use "cheap" paint - it's actually quite good quality. Having a dealer pay for a repaint though... the whole truck, or the parts that are affected? The dealer is likely going to farm out the job locally, so you better be sure you get what you expect in the way of quality. Your truck is new... if I had a new truck the dealer was going to repaint, I wouldn't own it... I'd make them take it back. A repaint will always be a repaint and the value of the truck will be less. Just my two cents....

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I know a lot of people that have had problems with Toyotas paint. I dont think its a very good quality at all.

That's why this is such a great country... we can all have our own opinions... and they're worth precisely what you pay for them.

I am curious, if they just repaint my hood and roof will this really fix the problem or is there something wrong with the metal that will cause this to eventually happen again?

pics of damage? i am curious if they can be removed with an aggressive clay...

first of all, let me say i am extremely picky, and detail exotics as a hobby.

when i received my truck, i had some trash in the paint here and there, but it wasn't anything that would be removed with clay. it is actually within the clear or atop the base. and it's so minor that i would not risk going through the potential tragedy of having my brand new truck painted by someone other than my favorite paint shop doing the work. what i also had were strange brownish elongated round marks some were half an inch in length. it was almost like something thick was splashed on the truck, on the front of the hood and along side the driver side of the roof. they almost looked like contamination of the base, but i actually was able to get them all out with optimum compound and a pad that was probably not aggressive enough but i didn't measure the paint and wanted to use the least aggressive manner possible and work slowly. i know they meter the paint down to the drop on these new vehicles and the clear is incredibly thin. i got them all out and finish polished them with optimum polish - no issues and it looks great.

but the little pieces of trash are still here and there and it doesn't bother me. there is maybe one per panel, and it of course is all top side stuff - a tiny one near the washer nozzles, and a couple on the roof.

it is my opinion that the toyota paint itself is ideal, at least for waterborne, but the manner in which they apply it is sub par due to the bean counters. the coats are extremely thin, especially the clear. but in comparison to honda, the clear coat is relatively hard. it resists scratching pretty good, whereas hondas if you simply look at them wrong they show a defect.

OP, i would be very careful about this decision. make sure you cover all of your bases with the people who will be doing the work and toyota - the finish needs to come back in at least new type condition. anything less would be unacceptable. some production shops are just not interested in spending the time to make sure it is right because the average person isn't aware.

Relative to other manufacturers, I like the Toyota paint. I have no way of measuring thickness, but I have found that it buffs out better than other cars I own so that leads me to believe it is actually thicker than my bimmer where I have had an issue or two.

On previous vehicles I have seen the rust dots. In my case, it was from grinding steel with an angle grinder too close to the car. The dots embedded themselves in the paint so it could easily be viewed as rust from below. I was able to compound buff them out and after a finish detail, good as new. I learned my lesson on quick steel jobs though.

As noted above, I would also suggest a good detail over a repaint. At least try the detail first, what is there to lose? Whenever I look to buy a used car and it was repainted, there is a story. I prefer to buy no-story vehicles though.

port damage is actually very common. you should see the OE repair and paint operations at ports - they are amazing. the difference is whether or not they disclose the damage when it hits a certain value. my wife had the same thing occur as you. she purchased a new silver 2007 honda civic si sedan. the car had a bunch of issues right off the bat with the driver's side. random things, like the door detent was not working so the door would fly open, little strange things in the paint on the rocker and rear quarter, etc.

well, when honda took the car in to do the paint on the rocker and fix the detent, they sanded it down and discovered body filler. apparently the car was damaged at port in a major way, ie the ENTIRE left side, and they failed to report it even though the amount of damage was way over the predetermined point where they don't have to disclose it.

aside from that stuff, which actually ended up in the broker taking the car back for another new 2007, the car was at the dealership 10 times in 2 months for other stuff. it was a lemon, partially, but it also was a testament to the way honda has gone because the one that replaced it, which came right off the lot from Mike Piazza Honda, has had a boatload of issues that are very common on that generation Si.

When I had my hood resprayed at the Toyota dealer, the bodyshop told me that the factory paint is super thin because the factory measures it to the least amount possible for coverage. The repaint, on the other hand was applied manually, so it is heavier cause the spray man doesn't have the ability to apply it super thin and uniform. My experience with this truck is that the paint sucks. It will scratch extremely easily and the clear coat is really thin as meantioned here. I don't know if Dodge has changed, but my 99 Durango had excellent paint. My 06 Camry's paint is also more durable than the Taco, fwiw...

Its because the paint is water based and real soft. That is why its scratches easy and what not.

Yup....ageee, the paint on our trucks sucks, is really thin and scratches easily. Unfortunately with the new environmental standards a lot of car companies are going the same route.
