Now to bore you on what my project consisted of. One of our departments would produce an excel spread sheet with a complete roster of all personnel in our work-center duplicated across multiple sheets. Each sheet was tracking a different training item. So I wanted a document to be able to print out a sheet that could be broken down by a respective shift. In total, the document provided to us had around 600 individuals on it whereas our shift only had like 20 people. So I wrote a script using excel's vBasic to create a front end file picker to choose each document's file source as well as a dropdown to select which column in the master document the pertinent dates would be found.

The end user (in this case, me) would have to create an exact copy of their shift roster in alphabetical order spelt the exact same way as the master document in-order to do the comparison. I had it use Column A, row 1 as the starting reference which would compare to the first available sheet with pertinent data on it. It would pull the Sheet.name then row by row compare names to the master list until it found a match, then it would pick the date in the date column and print it to a new document before moving down to the next line in the roster for the next name. Once it reached the bottom of the roster it would move to the next tab in the master document and repeat the process exporting the dates in the next column. It would repeat until it ran out of sheets in the master document. The final pass on the output document was to format the dates to Green if current, Yellow if coming due this month, or Red if past due.

I tried to make a status bar that was auto updating that would show the end user that the program was working, but that ended up breaking so when the program was running, you just had to look away from the monitor since the constant page swapping caused an epileptic seizure that would put our East Asian brothers and sisters to shame. I couldn't look at the screen when it was running it was that bad. But it produced what I wanted so I ran with it. Shaved about 3 hours hand jamming that document into a 2 minute process. I only knew basic programming and had to spend a lot of time browsing forums finding copy/paste solutions that I could tweak to fit my needs. The code was beautiful but the execution was dog ugly. Was it worth it in the end? Not really, but I'm a lazy guy when it comes to that so if I can have something else produce a product that makes my life easier and helps out my peeps keep track of their shit, its a win win.

That's precisely why I built mine, too. I don't know that mine would be doable more than once before you offed yourself.
Hell yes. I agree. It might be ugly but if it works, it works. :D

Came across this beautiful piece of abstract "art" holding one of the back stops together. Needless to say, it's broken in half and needs to be reattached. Thought you guys might appreciate some horror today. E6DA0ECE-1762-4584-834C-C1BB86CB97DA.jpg
