1st Gen Lunchtable Thread - General Discussion

I learned on an early 90's Accord, 1st gear is very hard to learn but after that all clutches are easy.

Actually I guess it would be easy to teach someone stick on my truck as long as we were offroad, 4lo would be easy to learn with. A lot more unforgiving though if you drop the clutch

i learned in a 98 hp volvo

Its not bad if you just start in first and focus on finding the friction point and then move up through the gears.

 

Taught my son that way, made him reverse out a hill and vise versa. Just in 4 high though but still did good and only stalled a couple times.

 

I feel pretty comfortable driving standard on the mountain, haven’t done it for a few years but I think I could figure it out.

it’ll take a couple more try’s to feel comfortable driving around town.

 

I bought my first 5spd during a snow storm at 18. I went on a 3hr 150mile road trip for shits and giggles and did fine until I hit a patch of black ice going around a corner 3 miles from my apt. Didn't know what to do so just held in the clutch and drifted into a telephone pole. Slowest wreck of my life and I had to dukes of Hazzard through the window because the door was crushed shut and wouldn't open

 

I'm going to teach my wife this summer how to drive the green truck. She wants to drive it on the fire roads but is a little nervous to drive it in traffic.

I had only been driving stick for about a few months at the time (16 yrs old?) but never his truck. He had bought a car out in the Bay Area and needed me to drive his truck back....those steep hills, that traffic, fuck all of it

Knowing how it works makes it easier to learn so I'm sure you would. Tried teaching an ex of mine in my old car, when someone doesn't understand the idea of turning off overdrive when going downhill to save the brakes, they're probably going to have a harder time learning stick.
